The Kansas Board of Education is expected to approve its science standards today, even though the language in the standards remains a work in progress.
The standards cast doubt on evolution and redefine science to allow for non-natural explanations. After nearly a year of debate, they’re expected to be adopted by the board at its meeting today in Topeka.
Scientists and educators have decried the changes, which they say are motivated by religious beliefs that threaten to weaken public understanding of science. Two national groups — the National Academy of Sciences and the National Science Teachers Association — withdrew their material from the standards in protest.
That means the Department of Education will have to rewrite those sections, which occur throughout the standards, or risk a copyright lawsuit. It will take some time for the department to rewrite the affected material — best estimates run from two weeks to a month.
