Bush to speak Monday at Kansas State

MANHATTAN, Kan. — President Bush will speak Monday at Kansas State University as part of its Landon Lecture series.
His lecture, the 142nd in the series, will be at 11 a.m. at Bramlage Coliseum.

“We are excited that President Bush is coming to K-State and we owe a huge debt of gratitude to Sen. Pat Roberts for his assistance in getting President Bush to accept our invitation,” Jon Wefald, Kansas State president, said today.

Bush will speak on the global war on terrorism. Admission will be limited to K-State students, faculty and staff; special invited guests; and soldiers from nearby Fort Riley.

I just got in touch with my Manhattan connections and got this response back about protesting.

"Manhattan Alliance for PEace and Justice is applying for a permit today.
We will discuss it at our board meeting tomorrow and develop a game
plan."

He will let me know and I will post here what they have found out.

I don't know if you have gotten this information yet but Bush is speaking at 11 am on Monday, tickets are limited to students, faculty, and select military and guests. I think if you have a kstate ID you can get a ticket, however to get tickets you must go to Bramalage tomorrow from noon to 6 pm, first come first serve. If you have any other questions just send me an email.

5. Welcome to DU!

I am mostly planning on protesting but I will let my son know since he is a student there. Somehow I don't think he wants anywhere near him and is not quite the disrupter his old mother can be. I left him a message offering to take him or his roomies to the protest, we will see if he takes me up on it.

8. I heard Nixon there

In 1970 or 1971, President Richard Nixon delivered a Landon Lecture. We had to show our student or faculty IDs to get in. He helicoptered into the then open space north of Ahearn Field House, where he spoke. And took off immediately after the speech. We were frustrated because there was no question period which was usual after other Landon Lectures.

A history professor actually heckled him, as I recall. He was later dismissed.

I believe Nixon thought K-State would be one of the few colleges he could safely visit as the protests raged about the Vietnam War. And he was largely right. The Boston Globe did a nasty cartoon depicting K-Staters as beanie-clad children. The Collegian ran the headline: "He came. He spoke. He left."

I will be anxious to see how this "war president" is greeted and what hoops students will have to just through to get in to hear him!

9. The TV coverage tonight

in Topeka was hysterical. The TV bimbo (she is an absolute waste of breathable air) was practically squiggling in her chair while she squeaked out the "good news". Then they interviewed all the excited students who stood in LONG lines to get tickets to hear their president *sigh*. It was gross but to be expected since the names Abramoff, Scanlon....well all the other BFEE have never crossed those swollen, well groomed lips.

We will see what happens, I am still waiting for news on if the Peace and Justice people were able to get permits for a protest.

10. Will * get any tough questions?

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Move over, Oprah. President Bush is making himself into television's newest talk show host by making audience participation a feature of his appearances.

Bush has been taking questions from audience members in recent speeches, and the White House says none has been prescreened. It's a throwback to the folksy style on the campaign trail that helped him win re-election and a departure from the heavily scripted speeches that were the norm last year.

And his answers have resulted in some revelations -- both personal and political.

The White House has grown so comfortable with the format that most of his appearance Monday at Kansas State University was reserved for Q-and-A with the audience.

And unlike the more intimate settings where the president has taken questions before, this appearance was set in front of a coliseum full of several thousands, including students, soldiers from nearby Fort Riley and invited guests.

11. Not Pre-Screened???

Of course the questions are pre-screened as is the audience. EVERY question is friendly and framed to make the idiot look good and EVERY PERSON in the audience is pro-Bush, applauding like mad, and laughing at all his country-boy jokes.
