Has anyone else gotten stuff from Scherer? (running against Moore)
Has anyone else been getting campaign stuff from a guy running for the Kansas 3rd named Thomas Scherer? I don't know where this guy has come from, but he seems to be running a serious campaign. For the last few months I've been the recipient of a t-shirt, bumper stickers, and some fairly professional campaign literature (although his website is a little shaky, to say the least).

I'm guessing he's running as an Independent - his site doesn't indicate he's challenging Moore in the primary, although he says he'll follow the platform of the state and national Democratic party.

When a shirt arrived from him, I was curious (I wondered if he was a Republican) and checked out his site. He claims to be a progressive and I thought - well goodie, so I emailed him about the war in Iraq, thinking it was odd that nothing about it appeared on his site. He wrote right back, saying he was opposed (good) and seemed pretty articulate on the subject. Sadly, when I wrote him back asking his position on women's privacy issues he indicated he was pro-life - I told him he just lost my vote, becasue this is an important issue for me.

Still, it looks like he's going to run on Moore's left and depending on who the Republicans pick - no doubt another rabid wingnut, unless they get some sense - it might hurt him. I'm pissed at Dennis Moore for a variety of reasons, but I'm also hoping we can have a significant pickup in the House this year so I suppose we need to keep him.

Anyway, this Scherer guy is interesting, and I'm wondering if anyone else has been getting his literature - he might be sending it out to registered Dems.

Here's his site, btw - it's pretty sad, which is strange because the stuff I've gotten has been professionally done:

1. Not in the district
but I wonder if we compiled and sent him a bunch of ways he could still be pro life and support women's issues he would read them and take that under consideration?

Who isn't pro life? There are ways to reconcile those two things, check out Kucinich. There are others who have similar thoughts and have adjusted their policies to reflect that.

Just wondering. I don't have the time to check it out now but it might be worth a try later.

2. Interesting
He's all over the board. His real interests are disability and vet issues. He's filed several lawsuits contending that he was discriminated against because of his disabilities like his lawsuit against a bank and the FHA about a car loan: http://www.kscourts.org/ca10/cases/2002/05/01-3221.htm So far I haven't seen a case he has won.

There is also this case (Adobe - *.pdf - document link): http://www.usdoj.gov/crt/briefs/lsac2.pdf which causes me some concern. At the heart of it is the issue of whether or not Mr. Scherer has a protectable interest (that is being violated) sufficicent for him to become a part (as an appellant) of a lawsuit filed by the USDoJ against the Law School Admission Council on their failure to properly accommodate those with physical disabilites when they administered the Law School Admissions Test (LSAT). The Justice Department and the LSAC reached an agreement and had the case dismissed. Scherer tried to become a party to this action by claiming he had a personal interest in this case based of his own suit that he filed against UMKC Law School which appears to have been pending at the time. In other words, Scherer tried to make himself a party to lawsuit that had already been settled by the two original litigants on behalf of the party he was suing in another case.

As discussed in the United States’ Brief as Appellee in appeal No. 01-3203,
at 6-13, the decision in this case will in no way affect any of Scherer’s legally
protectable interests. This suit was filed by the government on behalf of four
named individuals who have physical disabilities and “(a)ny other persons with
physical disabilities who have been the victims of LSAC’s discriminatory policies”
(R. 3 at 11). Because Scherer alleges that he is a person with mental disabilities...

I don't know. This troubles me a little bit. And I don't like the pro-life stance either but I'm willing to hear the particulars if it means getting someone who will be responsive on some of the stuff that Moore is ignoring.

You've also reminded me that I need to get busy on the Kansas 2006 Elections page.
