Greetings.

ProKanDo is joining with Kansas NOW and Kansas Equality Coalition in an
effort to secure a hearing on the Abstinence Plus Education Act - SB 508.

Presently, the bill is being held up in House Federal and State Affairs
Committee by Chairman Edmonds.

We will have two actions on Wednesday the 15th.

1. First, we will go to the State Board of Education meeting where they will
be taking action on the Model Health Standards. At this point, we will know
if they will be voting for OPT IN or reinstating the existing regulations
with the OPT OUT policy for sex education. The last time that the Board
considered the standards, they deadlocked 5-5 on the issue of opt-in vs.
opt-out.

The opt-in program creates an unnecessary barrier to critical health
information for our students. For the opt-in requirement, parents would be
required to submit a permission slip allowing their child to participate in
medically accurate sex education courses.

2. After the Board meeting, we will then go to the Capitol so that we can
speak with Chairman Edmonds and other committee members and let them know
that constituents request a hearing on the Abstinence Plus Education Act.


WHERE:
Department of Education Building, 120 SE 10th Avenue, Topeka KS 66612. From
there, we will go the Capitol building.

WHEN:
Arrive at 9:50 a.m., Discussion begins at 10:15 a.m. We will arrive at the
Capitol between 11:00 am and 11:30 am.

change. There is also a parking garage on 9th Ave.
