TOPEKA – In a blatant breach of ethical conduct, Rep. Shari Weber (District 68, Herington) publicly opposed and voted against legislation that increases competition for a private organization for which she serves as the president/CEO. With only two weeks remaining in the legislative session, Rep. Weber is demonstrating her priority is putting her personal business ahead of the people’s business.
“Kansas has a part-time legislature, but Shari Weber is acting like a full-time lobbyist,” Kansas Democratic Party Executive Director Mike Gaughan said. “Rep. Weber needs to remember she’s an employee of the people of Kansas first. She should do her job and stop putting what’s best for her ahead of what’s best for the residents in Dickinson and Morris counties.”
Just like the trade association she works for, President/Representative Weber has been actively working against SB 264, which passed the Kansas House of Representatives yesterday. SB 264 is a compromise between the Kansas Bankers Association and municipalities that allows cities, counties and school districts to invest idle funds in banks that have a physical presence in the taxing community. Weber spoke against SB 264 on the House floor where she also distributed a letter written on her state legislature letterhead encouraging legislators to vote against the bill.
President/Representative Weber is a current employee of Community Bankers Association and served as a lobbyist for the association when she was defeated by Bill Kassebaum in 2002.
