Two more KS repukes in trouble

TOPEKA — Two Johnson County legislators — one seeking a higher office and one not seeking re-election — were fined today for campaign finance violations.

Sen. Kay O’Connor, an Olathe Republican running for Secretary of State, was fined $5,000 for illegally soliciting campaign contributions from lobbyists, the second time within a year that she has faced such allegations.

O’Connor acknowledged she violated the law that prohibits candidates for statewide office from seeking contributions from lobbyists while the Legislature is in session. She signed a decree with the state Governmental Ethics Commission and agreed to pay the fine it imposed.

In August, the commission fined O’Connor $3,000 for violating the same law. In both cases, O’Connor said the violation was unintentional.

Commission members said this year’s case was less serious than last year’s because O’Connor realized she made a mistake and called lobbyists herself, telling them to ignore her solicitation letter. But they said it warranted a larger fine because it was a second violation.

Rep. Patricia Kilpatrick, an Overland Park Republican, was fined $4,000 for campaign finance violations.

Kilpatrick told the commission that the mistakes she made on her last report for her 2004 campaign were the result of personal problems. She described herself as a victim of domestic violence.

is it really too much to ask to have a Secretary of State who is familiar with and respects campaign finance laws enough not to break them?

4. 1965 Votings Rights Act Expiring

I couldn't agree with you more, Telly (besides, you're a Yankee fan). Keep in mind that, since the Republican-controlled Congress is going to allow the 1965 Voting Rights Act expire, the responsibility for safeguarding our voting rights will fall upon the states. Can you imagine having someone in charge of guaranteeing those rights who believes that it was a mistake to give women the right to vote? This Secretary of State race needs to be understood as a critical test for all voters. Ron Thonburgh doesn't want to corral the renegade neocon Election Commissioners who are severely curtailing our ability to vote, and O'Connor who . . . as I said earlier.

January 20, 2001 Deep in my heart of hearts, I didn't want to vote in November, but it was my duty and I did it. With rare exceptions, I've been voting in every election since I turned eighteen, and, except for the one for Ronald Reagan in 1980, I can't think of a vote I was more proud to cast than this one for George W. Bush. Now, praise the Lord, Bill Clinton is gone. Talk about women's suffering!

George took office today, ending such a dark time in our history. I have to say I'm not particularly impressed with the kid's past of illicit drug use and Lord knows what other types of immorality, but anything's better than what we had. And at least he's bringing back some of the people who made the 1980s such a time of enlightenment. If I close my eyes tight and think really, really hard, I can almost convince myself that the past eight years never even happened.

On the other hand, it really burned my cookies seeing Jean Carnahan go off to the Senate, even if John Ashcroft is getting ready to show her who's the boss. For the time being, anyway, the state of Missouri remains in the grip of yahoos. Bob Holden's $1 million inauguration on January 9 was absolutely horrifying: I don't know which was worse, his two Ralph Lauren tuxedos or Lori's bawdy gold-embossed strapless taffeta number. Or the fact that Anheuser-Busch, the AFL-CIO, Southwestern Bell, Monsanto and their ilk paid for most of it.

I so hate seeing Democrats act like good Republicans.
