For those of you who are interested in the Kansas State Board of Education race because of last year's vote on the state's new "science" standards, here's what is going on.
The 1st District is the only race that required a Democratic primary. The other races were all for the GOP nominee of their respective districts, the moderate (non-ID wingnuts) are winning in two of them. But don't lose heart, the winners of the GOP primaries will each face a strong Democratic candidate in November. Another factor in our favor is that several of the moderate candidates have vowed to support the Dem if they lose their race tonight.
Here are how the races are currently shaping up. (results from

1st District :woohoo:
Janet Waugh is up for re-election. She was one of the four votes
against the Intelligent Design agenda. Her opponent, Jesse Hall complained that Waugh spent too much of her time on the board complaining about already settled matters, like Intelligent Design. :eyes: He was also backed by members of the religious right. He was outed as a stealth Dem candidate a few weeks ago.
Much to everyone's relief it looks like Waugh will advance to the November election!
183 out of 190 (96.3%) precincts reporting statewide
* Jesse L. Hall (D) 3165 votes
* Janet Waugh (D) 5912 votes

5th District :woohoo:
Connie "evolution is a fairy tale" Morris, a complete wingnut amd embarrassment for the state of Kansas is losing her primary battle to former teacher and moderate Sally Cauble. It was a Republican primary and finally the GOP stepped up and looks like they have decided to knock Morris off the pedestal she's been sitting on.

* Tim Cruz (R) 0 votes
* Sally Cauble (R) 8852 votes

R-Ken R. Willard 10133 54 %
9th District :woohoo:
Jana Shaver and Brad Patzer are running for a seat vacated by one of those 6-4 wingnuts named Iris Van Meter. Van Meter ran and won as stealth RWingnut candidate in 2004. Shaver was the candidate that most Dems hoped would win because she's a moderate.
R-Brad Patzer 8870 42 %
R-Jana Shaver 12182 58 %
The good news is that the moderate GOP candidates have vowed to support the Democratic nominees in November if they lost their race.
Several moderate Republican candidates have vowed, if they lose Tuesday, to support the Democratic primary winners in November. With the campaign enlivened by a crowded field of 16 candidates contending for five seats — four held by conservatives who voted for the new science standards last year —
a shift of two seats could overturn the current 6-to-4 majority. The four-year terms are staggered so that only half the 10-member board is up for election each two years.
