Do you remember back in January when we held that first Take Back Kansas rally in Lawrence? Do you remember that some in the press wrote about it as a watershed moment that we would all look back upon? (If not, see www.mainstreamcoalition.com for a reminder!)
Well, today, my friends, we get to celebrate what can happen when moderates come together and work across lines of political party, geography, organizational affiliation(s), and not agreeing on every single issue. We came together in ways that paid off for Kansas public education.
So, it’s a good day for Public Education in Kansas! The radical majority on the School Board may still be radical, but they are no longer the majority on the State Board of Education here in Kansas.
Thanks to so many of you for making yourselves part of the Take Back Kansas campaign.
Here at home, we are obviously disappointed in Harry McDonald’s loss. Harry and his people—and the Take Back Kansas campaign—worked hard and we appreciate the efforts and energy given in District 3. At the beginning of this campaign, we all agreed that having Harry meet Don Weiss in November would be the best-case scenario. While we did not get that outcome, there is hope for the November 7th election left in District 3.
We also are disappointed that Donna Viola is not the one who will meet Democrat Jack Wempe in November, but, again, we are fortunate to have another candidate to support in District 7 as well.
There is good news in the western Kansas District 5 where Sally Cauble and Tim Cruz are now the candidates for the fall. In District 9, in the southeastern part of the south, Jana Shaver and Kent Runyan is a match-up that is also a win for Take Back Kansas.
In House races, we are pleased to see that the Democratic primary in District 23 went to Milack Talia, who will now face incumbent Judy Morrison in the November election.
Not all the news is good news this morning. We lare sad about the loss of a good legislative friend in Jim Yonally, who lost his Republican primary in House District 16. We thank Jim for all his good work on MAINstream issues and are disappointed that he will not be returning to represent District 16. Thank you, Jim.
Now is the time to take a deep breath, get ready for school to start back up, and come back refreshed and ready for work in the November 7th General Election!
You've done well, my friends! Good work!
