More Dems than Rethugs at Ryun (R-KS) meet & greet this AM - pics
Edited on Thu Aug-17-06 03:06 PM by Mabus
We went to a Jim Ryun "meet and greet" this morning in Lawrence. We saw more fellow Dems there than Ryun supporters. We all remained civil to Ryun but we got our various points/issues across to him.

When we got there Ryun and part of his entourage were headed out the door for a photo-op. Naturally I followed and took some pictures of the photo-op.

When we all went into the store, Ryun looked around and asked me if I were there for him. I said yes. He took my hand, very sweetly I might add, into his and gently shook it. He introduced himself. I did likewise. Then I told him that when I was growing up that he was very much a hero of mine. In fact, he made me proud to be a Kansan.

Ryun was just beaming. He was so happy.

Then, I looked him square in the eye and said, "but all that changed after you were elected to Congress. Now, you make me embarrassed to be from Kansas." He looked stunned and the smile suddenly disappeared from his face. I started off by asking Ryun about his sweet house deal and the contributions from ARMPAC from slave labor in the Marianas Islands. I asked Ryun why he wouldn't give the money back because, as a good Christian, he knows that the money came from women subjected to forced abortions and prostitition. At that point Congressman Ryun told me that he didn't need to talk to me and walked away. As he walked away, he swept his campaign workers along with him, and they all retreated to the back of the store.

My husband did manage to have a more civil conversation with one of Ryun's campaign aides. His line is that there is no need to give back money to ARMPAC because no one has been convicted of anything. There's no proof that there is any connection between Abramoff and DeLay. Talkingpoints.com (instead of talkingpointsmemo.com) is a lefty website and we shouldn't believe anything printed there. Finally, if we want the truth, we should start reading The Weekly Standard. (I almost laughed out loud at this advice :eyes: )

We left and talked to a friend outside the store for a few minutes. Ryun left about the same time we did. The total time for this "meet and greet" was twenty minutes. That's it. No one but Democrats asking questions showed up and so Ryun left.

Oh, yeah, boycott UPS especially the one next to Hy-Vees.

Here's what greeted at the door of the UPS store in the mall at the corner of Clinton Parkway/Kasold (in the building next to the HyVee):

When we got there Ryun was heading out the door for a photo op. Take note of the number of people in the photo, there will be a quiz. ;)

Here's the photo op. Note how happy Ryun's constituent is:

Here's a second picture of the photo op. Don't you just love Jim's geniune smile?

Here's the big crowd of Ryun supporters that showed up. Note that most of them were involved in the photo op. That's because, as far as we could figure out, the only non-Ryun campaign worker in this picture is the employee. To be fair there were two people who were there for business, two store employees, me, my husband and the UPS driver in the photo-op who didn't work for Ryun's campaign but sadly that was the entire crowd at that point. We ran into two more Dems coming in to ask Ryun some uncomfortable questions onour way out.

22. LOL
I have tapes of both Kentucky Fried Movie and the Groove Tube around here somewhere.

They don't have Safety Sam on youtube.com. I think a talking penis violates their sense of what is proper.

30. Why does this not surprise me?
You know what I think it is funny? It's how many of us seem to share the same cultural (or subcultural) references and influences, yet, if it weren't for the internet we never would have met. Or maybe I just started the party a little early today.

It's the internets. I don't know what I'd do without it. Partyin'? Pass it, okay?

32. No shit
Yeah, plus we all grew up with the same three major networks, a PBS station and a more controlled radio playlist than we would like to admit. What's weird to me is that others, who grew up with the same major influences, turned out to be Republicans.

I wonder if there would be liberal road rage without the internet? If not for the internet, how else could we freely vent our political views (especially during the early part of this dark King George II era) and know that we weren't alone in feeling that way? Man, I have been pissed about something I've seen on tv and then I cruise here and find out I'm not alone. I guess that's what it is. Not to mention that you can communicate with others so easily. Ah, no more juggling the phone while doing other stuff. I swear it is so much easier to smoke, eat, drink and communicate and not have to worry about stuff like smacking lips, drunken phone calls or interrupting someone when they're in the middle of something else just to tell them something stupid.

33. That's what drew me here in the first place.
I was working in the good Republican suburbs at the time, and felt like I was just stewing in my own juices. DU let me know we weren't alone. And then to meet local DUers in real life made it even better. These tubes can foster new communities. Keep on truckin'!

He said he doesn't mess around with U.S. Reps. He leaves that to the likes of less reputable and attention-whores like Triumph, the Insult Comic Dog.
