Kansas GOP party chair gives up; will retire in Jan. 2007
Shallenberger doesn't want to run for chair position again. I guess he's tired of losing elections.

Kansas GOP leader to quit
“I can’t make anybody happy,” he says. He’ll retire from political life.

The Kansas City Star

Frustrated by the continuing schism in the Kansas Republican Party, state GOP Chairman Tim Shallenburger said Tuesday that he would not seek re-election in January.

“There is some stress involved in it,” the conservative said. “It’s difficult. You can’t make everybody happy. In my case, I can’t make anybody happy.”

The former House speaker, state treasurer, state lawmaker and 2002 GOP nominee for governor said he was retiring from politics.

“I just don’t have the desire to do it anymore,” he said.

Shallenburger’s exit from a party divided between moderates and conservatives continues a pattern. Several other recent state GOP chairmen, including Dennis Jones and Mark Parkinson, grew frustrated with the intractability of the party split.

1. Hmmmm
He was the reason Sebelius got so many votes! Well too bad Tim, you can't always win. He was pretty good for our side though, it will be interesting to see the slant of the next leader.

2. Onward to extinction
The sensible ones have already bailed. If Shallenberger was their leader before people started bailing, who is left to set the course for the party? Besides, the GOP likes to "stay the course" even after they've hit the iceberg.
