Dear KEC members, allies and supporters:
Today a bill banning domestic partnership registries will be introduced into the Kansas House of Representatives. House Bill 2299, authored by Representative Lance Kinzer, R-Olathe, is a direct attack on our Lawrence Chapter's hard work in getting a domestic partner registry introduced at the Lawrence City Council.
The text of the HB2299 reads:
HOUSE BILL No. 2299
By Representative Kinzer
AN ACT concerning cities and counties; prohibiting the enactment of certain ordinances or resolutions.
Be it enacted by the Legislature of the State of Kansas:
Section 1. No city or county shall enact any local legislation by the passage of an ordinance or resolution which creates a domestic partner registry or which otherwise establishes or recognizes any domestic partner relationship not recognized under state law.
Sec. 2. This act shall take effect and be in force from and after its publication in the statute book.
The Kansas Equality Coalition will fight this unfair piece of legislation with everything we have. Our Legislative & Lobbying Chair, Tiffany Muller, has, with our lobbyist Jim Yonally, already started developing a strategy to defeat this bill. We know that fair-minded Kansans will see this bill for what it is: a mean-spirited attack on LGBT Kansans by one of the most anti-gay legislators in Topeka.
Your help in defeating HB2299 is critical. Now more than ever, it's important that we raise the money to fund the fight in the Capitol. Any amount you can give - $50, $100, $500 - can be earmarked to go directly to our legislative fund. Click the "DONATE" link at the top of our home page to donate online (

Additionally, call your state representative and state senator, and tell them you support fair treatment for all Kansans.
This is a fight we can win, but only with your help!
Thanks to all who help,
Tom
**Please call your reps about this. We are making progress slowly but surely. I think this could be a good year for us again (what? two in a row you say?) Yes, we are getting things done as we grow. Please help in any way that you can.
Thanks.
