WAR IN IRAQ | Debating the best course of action
IRAQ: SURGE OR WITHDRAW? Iraq: Surge or withdraw? surge
Pulling out early would leave Iraqi people vulnerable to terrorists.
By KATIE GLUECK
TeenStar

“If we leave before the job is done, we’ll be back within a few years.”

Last month, when a majority in Congress approved a resolution and legislation to get us out of Iraq in 2008, our legislators failed to see the implications of their actions past the 2008 elections. A premature withdrawal would lead to a terrorist proxy state in Iraq, devastating consequences for the Iraqis and wouldn’t give the troop surge a chance to work.

Our troops have fought al-Qaida-supported Sunni insurgents since 2003, but today we confront an additional threat. Iranian-backed Shiite extremists, often members of the fanatical Mahdi Army, now employ the same terrorist tactics as the original insurgents. Furthermore, extremist Sunnis and extremist Shiites hate each other. Despite this, our troops recently established a precarious degree of order.

Speaking last month to an Israeli lobbying group, Vice President Dick Cheney said: “Shiite extremists backed by Iran could be in an all-out war with Sunni extremists led by al-Qaida and the remnants of the old Saddam regime. … If Sunni extremists prevail, al-Qaida and its allies would re-create the safe haven they lost in Afghanistan except now with the oil wealth to pursue weapons of mass destruction. …

3. She is only spewing out something she has heard elsewhere
A lot of adults do the same.

She stole her ideas directly from the Bush administration. We know that Cheney's facts on this are reliable, of course, because of his track record of candor and the unerring accuracy of his prognostications.

I look forward to giving this girl B's in college. An "A" essay might have found a more reliable source--such as one of the many returning veterans. Oh, wait, they had to head back out.

Actually, I'd probably fail this one, because it's nothing more than a badly cobbled-together reconstruction of part of Cheney's AIPAC speech.

Still, there's no doubt that this girl is headed off to college, rather than off to the Army. If I were her teacher, I would encourage her to enlist. A few years in the military would provide her the discipline she needs, given that she's so intellectually lazy.

8. What are the chances that Katie will enlist?
It's easy to point fingers and make accusations but the real test will be whether Katie believes what she says enough to enlist.

In other words: If she's so gung-ho, let's see her go!
