Anti-war banner creates a stir at political lecture
By JIM SULLINGER
The Kansas City Star

The caper was stealthy, startling and definitely against the rules.

A war protester rolled up a huge cloth banner and secretly secured it to the ceiling above a catwalk in the back of the Polsky Theatre at Johnson County Community College.

The banner initially went unnoticed by the nearly 400 people who attended a 90-minute lecture on bipartisanship Monday night. The lecture featured U.S. Rep. Dennis Moore, a Kansas Democrat, and Sen. Pat Roberts, a Kansas Republican.

About 15 minutes before the program ended, the protester unfurled the 20-foot square banner. It sounded as if the ceiling were falling.

People in the back row ducked as if a hard-hit foul ball were headed their way. Everyone turned around to look.

In large block letters, the banner accused the Bush administration, Moore and Roberts of “crimes against humanity.” The last line was a plea to end the Iraq war.

2. Sen. Nick Jordan Would Be an Improvement?
I understand that State Senator Nick Jordan is going to run against Cong. Moore. I hope that you don't really think he would be an improvement? Those who make noise about Moore or Boyda not being worthy of your support should live in the Fourth Congressional District where Todd Tiahrt is the congressman. Have you so quickly forgotten what Jim Ryun was like?

4. Which votes has Boyda cast that are different from how Ryun would have voted?
I also don't see where this article says anything about anyone running against Moore. He is being held accountable for his votes supporting the war. Just because he is a Democrat doesn't mean he gets to vote any which way he wants. His constituents have the right to appeal to him. Since he has canceled appointments with this particular group of voters, they chose to do this banner drop.

And I am sure we don't need to discuss Roberts' voting record. 9/11 Pat has certainly supported the president well.

As for Boyda, most of us in the anti-war community gave up on her months ago. Glad you like her; she will need a new group of loyalists when it comes time to run in 2008. :)

6. I Have Never Questioned
I was not questioning your right or duty to petition your Congressman or Congresswoman. They obviously need to know what their constituents think about their votes, on the war as well as the climate crisis. (I don't hear you expressing any concern for this issue - where does Boyda or Moore stand on those critical issues facing all of humanity?) I just question the wisdom of throwing the baby out with the bath water.

By the way, there are a lot of people, including myself, who consider themselves to be a member of the anti-war community. I do not think that you should be pretending to claim that title only for yourself. There are a lot of Democrats who are opposed to the war, but who will also see the wisdom of not returning Jim Ryun to Congress.

7. When did I claim this title all to myself?
I just happened to get back from a national conference on peace and heard many good national speakers on the topic. Just reporting what I learned. This is my number one issue. So I follow many reps' votes on this issue. Many Dems have been more than disappointing. Boyda is one of the worst, since she gave that interview on ABC news the day she was inaugurated. I have been to two national peace conferences this summer and at both, as soon as people learned I was from Kansas, I was asked about Nancy Boyda. She has quite a reputation nationally. And no, I can't defend her votes so far.

I can't support any politician who supports war and domination, and especially this war. Some people draw the line on other issues, such as the environment. Many women I know won't vote for any candidate who is anti-choice regardless of their stance on other issues. I think the war on Iraq is the most important issue facing this congress. And they have failed. An Iraqi dies every 10 minutes. Two or three US soldiers die every day. Please show me how Nancy Boyda's votes on the war have differed from the way Jim Ryun would have voted. I don't see a difference. So even if on the remote chance that Ryun is returned to congress, what difference would it make to our soldiers and their families?

And it's not just Boyda. Claire McCaskill is also refusing to vote to end the war. I talked to two veterans this weekend who both made commercials for McCaskill and went on the campaign trail with her. She is now refusing their phone calls and does not respond to emails from them. One of them was in her office last week and she refused to see him. She threatened to arrest him if he came back!

Nancy Pelosi is also having citizens arrested for coming to her office to discuss ending the war and impeachment. I could tell you many other stories of Democrats arrogantly refusing to see citizens or to discuss certain topics. DEMOCRATS!! They are NOT infallible.

Anti-war banner

Bravo to that brave young man for unfurling the anti-war banner at Johnson County Community College. We are going to see more and more of this as anti-war voices are drowned out by those profiting greatly from this war.

And believe me, our Congress is profiting too, as donations from the war machine flow to fill their campaign coffers.

I ask Rep. Dennis Moore and Sen. Pat Roberts: How can you ask a man to be the last man to die for a mistake?
