Governor: Morrison should quit if allegations proved about professional conduct
TOPEKA | Attorney General Paul Morrison should step down if it’s proven that he tried to use a former lover to gain information or influence in cases handled by the Johnson County District Attorney’s office, Gov. Kathleen Sebelius said today.
Sebelius said that she wanted the facts to play out, and that she wasn’t calling for his resignation. She noted that Morrison has accepted responsibility for the affair, but that if the allegations about his professional conduct are true, it’s a different mater.
A former staffer in the district attorney’s office has filed a sexual harassment complaint against Morrison. She is alleging that Morrison attempted to use her to gain information about open cases – and to influence the legal dispute between District Attorney Phill Kline and eight fired staffers.
“She said if either of those were accurate then yes, he should step down,” said Sebelius’ spokeswoman, Nicole Corcoran.
Sebelius made the comments after a firestorm of criticism descended on Morrison, a fellow Democrat. Some Republicans immediately called for his resignation, though Morrison said Sunday he has no plans to step down.
Morrison acknowledged an affair with Linda Carter, but denies he tried to use her to gain information about cases in the District Attorney’s office.
