Pro Peace Demonstration and Teach-InDEMONSTRATION AND TEACH-IN
End the Occupation on Campus
Lawrence, KS, March 25, 2008 — It has been almost three years since any political activism of this sort has taken place on the KU campus. A newly organized Pro-Peace coalition is organizing an End the Occupation demonstration on Stauffer-Flint Lawn, Tuesday March 25 at 12:00 pm. This demonstration will focus on educating the KU campus on the political situation as well as speaking out for peace in saying NO to the war and occupation.
The demonstration will be followed by a Teach-In at 7pm that evening at the ECM, with four speakers so far confirmed. The speakers are CJ Brune, KU Staff member and former Student, Joe Carr, Volunteer with Christian Peacemaker team, as well as two coalition members and KU students Greg Hill and Scott Pinkelman. Group discussions will also take place.
This March marks the 5th year of the U.S. occupation of Iraq. Responding to a call by the New Students for a Democratic Society (SDS), which was a major force in organizing student opposition to the Vietnam War, we are calling upon the KU and Lawrence community “to come together to send one loud resounding NO to the Bush administration and the Republican agenda, to the Democrats who refuse to carry out the mandate of their constituents, and to the University administrations that so often support war efforts." During this election year it is important that we recognize not only candidates' different positions on the occupation but also KU long-term institutional ties to the military-industrial complex.
This coalition believes that beyond academics, KU should embrace being an institution of higher learning, while supporting student’s rights to have a democratic space where students can impact the administration’s decisions. Our demonstration will include informational fliers, speakers, spoken word, music, and instigating discussion among KU students on what can be done to promote peace. Please come voice your opinion!
