Slattery announces U.S. Senate bid
Topeka — Former congressman Jim Slattery, a Democrat, on Tuesday announced his bid to unseat U.S. Sen. Pat Roberts, a Republican.

Introduced by Gov. Kathleen Sebelius before a cheering crowd, Slattery promised change in Washington, D.C., and criticized Roberts for marching lock-step with President Bush on the Iraq war and federal economic policies.

“My opponent is an entrenched politician who moved to Washington, D.C., before Neil Armstrong landed on the moon,” Slattery said.

Slattery took Roberts to task for backing policies that have resulted in increased national debt and high gasoline prices while oil companies reap record profits.

Slattery's in

Former Democratic Congressman Jim Slattery formally kicked off his bid to unseat Sen. Pat Roberts a few minutes ago here in Topeka, vowing to "change" the broken system of Washington.

Slattery plans additional announcement stops in Overland Park, Kansas City, Ks. and Wichita.

"The U.S. Senate is simply not getting the job done," Slattery told the audience at a Topeka convention center. He cited rising gas prices, a struggling economy, a "tragic and costly war" in Iraq and "breathtaking incompentence" on the part of Republican leaders as reasons change is needed.

2. Phase 2 Report Ends Roberts' Iraq Intel Stonewall
Four years after Kansas Senator Pat Roberts triumphantly cleared the Bush administration of misusing pre-war Iraq intelligence, the Phase 2 report of the Senate Intelligence Committee he once chaired today reached a much different conclusion. After Roberts successfully stonewalled past the 2004 and 2006 elections the studies examining White House statements on the Iraqi threat and the role of the Pentagon's Office of Special Plans, his successor Jay Rockefeller today concluded:

"The president and his advisers undertook a relentless public campaign in the aftermath of the attacks to use the war against Al Qaeda as a justification for overthrowing Saddam Hussein."

Not surprisingly, the SSCI Phase 1 Report released in July 2004 sought to lay the blame for faulty intelligence at the feet of the CIA. Chairman Roberts concluded that "what the President and the Congress used to send the country to war was information that was...flawed" and "most of the key judgments in the October 2002 national intelligence estimate on Iraq's WMD programs were either overstated or were not supported by the raw intelligence reporting." But Roberts also presumed the conclusion of the as-yet-uncompleted Phase 2 report, "the committee found no evidence that the intelligence community's mischaracterization or exaggeration of intelligence on Iraq's weapons of mass destruction capabilities was the result of politics or pressure."

During the very same press conference, Vice Chairman Rockefeller in response expressed his frustration and alarm over Roberts' statements:

"And I have to say, that there is a real frustration over what is not in this report, and I don't think was mentioned in Chairman Roberts' statement, and that is about the -- after the analysts and the intelligence community produced an intelligence product, how is it then shaped or used or misused by the policy-makers? So again there's genuine frustration -- and Chairman Roberts and I have discussed this many times -- that virtually everything that has to do with the administration has been relegated to phase two. My hope is that we will get this done as soon as possible."

3. C&L: Democrat Jim Slattery To Take On Bush Lapdog Pat Roberts For KS Senate Seat
Former Democratic Congressman, Jim Slattery, has officially jumped in the 2008 U.S. Senate race to take on GOP incumbent and loyal Bushie, Pat Roberts. Slattery is holding his own in the polls thus far in the race, keeping Roberts from breaking the 50% mark, which is stunning in a state that votes overwhelmingly Republican. The release of the Phase 2 report on prewar Iraq intelligence has given Slattery an opening to attack Roberts that’s big enough to drive a train through. Proving he’s ready to take the fight to to his opponent, Slattery wasted no time calling Roberts out for his role in covering up the lies of the Bush administration during the run up to the invasion of Iraq

After a nearly four-year investigation, the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence today released their final phase II report on prewar Iraq intelligence.

The report outlines many prewar statements made by members of the Bush Administration that according to the report “misrepresented the intelligence and threat from Iraq.”

Jim Slattery, candidate for the United States Senate, criticized the federal government.

“It is unconscionable that top government officials would willfully mischaracterize the intelligence to drum up support for a war,” Slattery said. “This is the worst kind of incompetence on the part of the federal government.”
