Senator Chris Steineger for Governor?
Senator Steineger just told the Progressive Caucus he is considering a run for governor. He just launched a website yesterday.

This is great news, IMO. Chris is a great guy.

1. Hah! At least two years ago he started
popping up at all sorts of events I would not have expected him to attend, and my first thought was, What is he running for?

He will have a very uphill climb to get his name out there and to overcome the name recognition that Brownback will have, since he's expected to run for Governor in 2010.

Any rumors about who now might be thinking of running for Brownback's seat?

Sure wish it was Sebelius.

3. this is a good thing?
I thought I read at Washington Days that he was some kind of economically conservative Democrat who was upset about Gilstrap's primary challenge.

I did not make the Progressive Caucus meeting because of the snow.

5. This is what I read
"Steineger would most likely face an uphill battle in the primary after writing a letter to the editor contemptuous of Sebelius and Senate Minority Leader Anthony Hensely, D-Topeka, in August.

The two had been campaigning for the primary opponent of incumbent Sen. Mark Gilstrap, D-Kansas City, a fiscal conservative who opposes abortion. In his letter published in The Topeka Capital-Journal, Steineger defended Gilstrap, saying the two Democratic leaders were "imposing a litmus test."

No prominent Democrats have yet said they would enter the governor's race. Term limits will push the popular Sebelius out in 2010. Lt. Gov. Mark Parkinson, who was seen as the party's biggest shot at retaining the governorship, already has said he won't seek the office. Dennis McKinney, the former House minority leader and recently appointed state treasurer, has been a rumored candidate, though he hasn't said he would run.

Steineger, whose fiscally conservative voting record has conflicted at times with fellow Senate democrats, said during Monday's show that he wouldn't make a decision about running for a couple of months. He said he has already been getting support."

First, that Steineger would support Gilstrap against progressives in his district who wanted Gilstrap gone. Especially since that is my district and I wanted him gone. Second, that Steineger is fiscally conservative himself. I generally don't like fiscal conservatives as that label often means that they are against corporate and income taxes and also not strong supporters of social programs. To me that says "economically conservative". So in what ways is he progressive?

6. He is pro-choice, he opposes the coal plants
Opposes voter ID. Supports increased school funding. He was very supportive of Jim Slattery, who was a progressive candidate.

Steineger is not conservative. There is a difference between being fiscally conservative and conservative on other issues.

The Progressive Caucus has supported him.
