HUTCHINSON, KAN | Sam Brownback and Tom Holland clashed before a raucous State Fair crowd Saturday, each insisting they knew how to revive Kansas’ economy if elected governor.
Saturday’s debate is the only one scheduled so far in the Kansas governor’s race, and both candidates used the opportunity to trash the other in front of a crowd fueled by partisan rancor and, seemingly, one too many sugared funnel cakes.
Holland, a Democratic state Senator from Baldwin City, showed more spirit than his underdog campaign has so far mustered. He blasted Brownback as a Washington insider partially to blame for Congressional gridlock and economic collapse.
“You just heard Sam talk about the federal government,” Holland said after Brownback criticized Washington. “He is the federal government. Mr. Brownback needs to come home and get out of government and let a business man manage (the state).”
