LOUISVILLE NEEDS TO ACT NOW TO CREATE THE BROADBAND-CABLE
SYSTEM IT NEEDS FOR THE FUTURE (By John R. Hicks
The really bad news has been that cable franchise agreements run for
decades. The current one won't expire until 2010. But the agreement
does provide that it can be voided or renegotiated if the cable
company changes hands or violates it s franchise agreement.
Well, it appears that providence has smiled on us. Insight Cable
*has* changed hands. (It just "went private" and, in the process,
bought out all of its publi c stockholders. A new investor, The
Carlyle Group, furnished over $600 million to accomplish this.)
Moreover, Insight violated its franchise agreement by failing to
notify the city of this change.
