Clooney sounds like conservative in first television ad

In the first campaign ad of the hyper-competitive 4th Congressional District race, Democrat Nick Clooney hit on issues designed to resonate with the district's conservative voters: the military, gay marriage and abortion.

n a 30-second spot that began airing on television stations last Tuesday, Clooney said:

"We need a strong military. I'm a veteran so I'll always support our troops and our veterans. I'm against abortion, and I believe marriage is between a man and woman."

Clooney served in Germany from 1952 to 1954 in the Army.

Allowing candidates to speak thier minds. Perhaps we would be better off not knowing how they stand on issues.

3. kind of sad

cuz i've talked to nick at length multiple times and know he's hardly some fundie nut. on almost all isues he's extremely progressive and told me of how he hates seeing wedge issues used to define campaigns. i hate seeing him do this, but i guess you have to talk the talk to get elected in kentucky.

i guess he's beating geoff davis to the punch, as it's ineveitble that davis, who's a total rightwing loon, would try to portray nick as some kind of 'anti-family' librul hell-bent on turning your chilren into homosexuals.

i'm disappointed, but i sort of understand the strategy behind it

I agree hes no zell Miller,It is what it takes to win in conservative town.I would like to know in detail by what he means by anti abortion.there are a lot of grey areas in that issue.would also like to know what he means by anti gay marriage does that mean he is against civil unions.

5. he's already said he doesn't support overturning roe vs wade

and when i asked him about civil unions, he said he hadn't made up his mind, but said he did see the benefits of them. when he told us his position on gay marriage, he did go out of his way to stress that bigotry of any kind shouldn't be tolerated, etc. he made great pains not to be homophobic in his approach, so we're not dealing with a zell here, but still, i wish he could find a better way

while we may have a reputation for being bigots and highly religious, i dont believe it and i hate to see him pandering to the people who are.
he was gonna be Davis anyway.

i like him, but i dont like this at all.

i let them know i couldnt support someone who would let a constitutional amendment against a sect of people be okay.

this is not the representation of the democratic party of civil rights that i am a part of.

7. I was at Blue Licks this weekend and saw that ad.

I was taking an extended road trip this weekend at spent the night at Blue Licks Battlefield state park, and saw that ad on TV there.

Having spent most of the last two days driving around the rural areas of this district...Augusta, Maysville, Washington, Mt Olivet, Carlisle, Flemingsburg, Vanceburg, and noticing the churches and country folks there, I think Clooney has to be somewhat representative of the traditional values of his district.

Its a real pretty area, yet I suspect its probably pretty traditional when it comes to things like marriage and sexual mores. So I think that ad is meant to reassure folks in this district that Clooney shares their values, or at least doesnt threaten them.

In any case, i did see alot of Clooney signs, together with some state rep who was running for relection. More Clooney and that state rep signs then Kerry/Edwards signs, tho I did see a few Kerry/Edwards signs in Carlisle , Maysville, and Augusta.

I also know this area (except for Lewis County) has been traditionally Democratic, too....

i live in maysville and can safely say that clooney is gonna win ;)

especially now after the 'looney clooney' ad
ive never heard so many older folks talk about how disgraceful and low that ad is!

it should be tight as far as the presidential race

theres alot of ignorance and money that backs bush(as with the rest of the country)

its kinda funny

you go to the richest part of maysville and see bush signs
you then go to the poorest with trailers and what not and still see them

but u always see kerry signs in the houses of the middle class.

how anyone could live in a trailer and honestly support shrub is beyond me.

11. Clooney is running in NORTHERN KY.

Bunning was my Congressman for years before becoming a Senator. It is a very conservative area. Clooney, at least, is a Dem. I voted for him.

But when I saw his TV ad a couple of weeks ago (home for a funeral), I thought he was a Puke. My wife thought so too.

I held my nose and voted for him. Better him than a real Puke.
