UPS to hire more than 5,000 in ($1 billion) expansion (in Louisville, KY)

UPS will increase the capacity of its Worldport hub at Louisville International Airport by 60 percent in an expansion expected to cost more than $1 billion and employ more than 5,000, the company said Wednesday.

In announcing the expansion Wednesday morning, UPS said it would hire 1,284 full-time workers and 3,787 part-timers to staff the expanded hub. UPS already employs about 18,000 in Louisville.

The full-time jobs will pay an average of $41.73 per hour before benefits and include additional pilots and executives, according to UPS’ application for state incentives. The part-time jobs don’t qualify for state tax breaks.

...

In Frankfort Wednesday morning, the state approved UPS to receive $31.6 million in incentives, according to Donna Duncan, commissioner for the department of financial incentives.

Certainly good for this area. Louisville has always seemed to buck any major downward trends. Seems there's always been some major company to move to the area or expand whenever some downward cycle in the economy would hit.

2. I don't even know why he is bothering to run
Some people say that he'll make the race for mayor more competitive, which may be true, but seriously, does anybody actually think he'll get more than 30% of the vote even?

Unfortunately, I think he (or maybe Kevin Kramer) may have a legitimate chance of becoming mayor in 2010, once Abramson is going to be gone due to term limits. When those certain Democratic Metro Council members gave them the presidency on the council, they helped to build the resume for both of these people that could help them in a run for mayor. I hope it isn't too late to reverse that damage...

But at least we can be thankful that the worst of them, Denise Bentley, is gone.

3. I have good news for you...
Abramson can be mayor thru 2014... the term limits are three terms, not two.

4. I see now
I thought it was three under the old government, and only two in the merged government, but according to the official city website, you are right, it is still three. That is good to know, hopefully he'll stay on for a third term.
