ERLANGER – Democrat Randy Blankenship will challenge the results of the Kentucky House of Representatives District 69 race, he said Wednesday morning.
“I believe we probably will take action today, or tomorrow at the latest,” he said.
Which course of action remained unclear at press time.
Blankenship has three options: seek a recanvas, a recount, or outright challenge the results. His attorneys were still researching the issue at press time.
He lost to Republican Adam Koenig by 80 votes, according to unofficial results on the Kentucky State Board of Elections Web site. The tally was 5,174 votes for Koenig and 5,094 for Blankenship.
Koenig said he’s not worried.
“The races have gone fine in Kenton County for years,” he said. “They’re all computerized now...so there should be no room for human error. But he can avail himself of his legal rights, I suppose.”
The race ran neck-and-neck on election night, until some media outlets called the race for Koenig around 10:30 p.m. Blankenship raised questions about the results before midnight.
“I don’t want to make a huge issue over this, but I think we should know if the person we’re sending to Frankfort is actually the person who’s supposed to go to Frankfort,” he said.
Blankenship said only 64 votes were cast at Erlanger Precinct 8, the city building, which raised a red flag. He said the number should have been higher.
