1. Can McConnell be defeated?

Unfortunately, even though the "Republican Revolution" appears to be toast before it could ever get going the way they wanted it, I somehow fear McConnell will be a lasting effect of that whole disaster until he retires. I hope I'm wrong though. I think Miller would have been a good candidate (he was my choice in the primaries until he dropped out), but now he seems to be headed to the chair of the state party. I only wish it was Bunning up for re-election, it would be a guaranteed win for the Democrats then.

8. Others are already working on that

there are ads running that tie McConnell to Bush over Iraq.
A great video clip to use would be Bush's first swearing in in 2000, showing McConnell shoving his way in on the podium for "face time." That would make a great commercial!

2. Still hope James W. Moore is thinking about it...

OK, he stands a snowball's chance in hell, as the Democratic 3rd District congressional primaries showed, but he is so spot-on about an variety of topics, and his strong stance against campaign financing was a breath of fresh air. Last I heard, though, he's doing his part to gather support for a Gore presidential run. I thought Horne was running, too, but you never can tell. McConnell is indeed vulnerable now, given his recent back-pedaling of his Bush-love. I seem to remember a lady by the name of Northup who tried the same trick.

3. He is probably the most vulnerable he's ever been

and I certainly hope he is defeated.
I like James Moore & Andrew Horne. Owen could make a formidable candidate - he has $$$. I heard Owen speak as the Lt. Gov. candidate in '03. Chandler also spoke, but I thought Owen out did him - much better speaker. Moore really impressed me with his primary campaign - not the result, but his stand on issues. Horne is good too but needs to re-think his position on universal health care.

4. If who ever runs

uses the same tactic that John Yarmouth used to defeat Anne Northup by typing that little wuss to agreeing with President Bush, it will wake the people up. Who wants a candidate that agrees with a lame duck President?

5. That strategy worked in Jefferson county

I'm not sure it would work, at this point, statewide. It's still a long way off to Nov. 2008 and if things keep going the way they are now, the g.o.p. could be in for more than a "thump'n!"

9. Stumbo for Senate?

According to today's Courier-Journal, perhaps! I think he could have what it takes to make the race a challenging race. Really though, I'd be happy with pretty much any Democrat, as long as it isn't Bruce Lunsford...

10. How about a candidate with a legitimate shot at beating McConnell?

I have my doubts about Stumbo, particularly after his failed Lt. Gov. candidacy with Lunsford. Stumbo has pissed off organized labor and that doesn't bode well for him.
I really wish Chandler would run against McConnell. He would have the best shot at beating him.

11. I think..

I think that Stumbo could actually win, though in all fairness, he wouldn't exactly be my FAVORITE candidate (the one I'd really like--and the one that isn't going to run since he has other duties now--is Jonathan Miller). It is just that compared to the other names I've heard floating around so far, Stumbo seems to be in the best place to win. My problem with Chandler running is that he would have to give up his House seat, and really, is it worth it to give up a House seat that would very likely go Republican (since that is the reddest district in the state, I believe) just to take a chance at POSSIBLY winning a Senate seat? I just think that whoever runs against McConnell should be somebody that is either not currently in office (Owen is a good example of this, I kind of like him more than Stumbo, but I'm not so sure he could win necessarily) or is in a state office that is not up for election.

12. I asked chandler about running several months ago

and he said he would not run against McConnell but might against Bunning.
I agree with you about Jonathan Miller (his birthday today) but I suspect he is not going to be willing to take on McConnell.

'Ditch Mitch'

Mitch McConnell's op-ed, "Inviting Terrorists in the Heartland," is relying on the short memory of the public in an attempt to shore up a damaged Presidency and secure his own reelection next year.

Perhaps Mitch has forgotten the U.S. soldier from Kentucky who was used as a pretend prisoner at Guantanamo, unknown to U.S. personnel who beat him so badly he ended up with a concussion and is still suffering from the after effects. It was not liberals who raised questions about what was going on down there but concerned military personnel.

Perhaps Mitch has also forgotten that there are already terrorists in American prisons, i.e. those who set off the first explosion in the World Trade Center basement, among others.

He also seems to have ignored the reports by our intelligence agencies that invading Iraq has not made us safer but in fact has placed us at far greater risk. Still, Mitch walks in lockstep with Bush.

If Mitch were really that concerned about our safety, he and Bush would have made sure that our borders and ports were secure. For years after 9/11, they did nothing.

Hopefully, next year, voters will remember the truth and vote to ditch Mitch.
