Drunk, high dad leaves baby in oven overnight, police say

(CNN) -- A Kentucky man high on marijuana and drunk on whiskey put his 5-week-old son in the oven Sunday and left him there overnight, police said.

The oven door was slightly ajar, and the oven was not turned on.

After smoking marijuana at the restaurant where he works as a cook, Larry Long, 33, returned home to share a fifth of whiskey with the baby's mother, Brandy Hatton, McCracken County Sheriff Jon Hayden said in a statement.

Hatton had four or five shots and went to bed while Long finished the bottle, Hayden said.

At 5:30 the next morning, Hatton awoke to the sound of the baby's cries coming from the oven. He had been in it for several hours, police said.

Emergency crews responding to the scene transported the infant to a local hospital, where he was found to be unharmed.

Police arrested Long and charged him with first degree wanton endangerment. He is being held on bail of $10,000.

Authorities have removed the baby from its mother's care and awarded emergency custody to members of her family.

8. Well the mother had four or five shots. That's not enough to incapacitate someone.

Maybe she has a hell of a lot more sense than her troubled partner and wanted to be sure nothing else had happened to the baby. If he was hallucinating to the point that putting the baby into an oven seemed sensible, who knows what else might've seemed rational. If the kid was squalling so plaintively maybe she worried about internal damage.

The McCracken County Sheriff's Department in Kentucky got a call from an area hospital saying that a man had called asking what charges he'd face for doing it.

"Had there been a concern about the child, I would've called an ambulance right away," Det. Robert Caskey said.

When police arrived at Larry Long's home, they found a 5-week-old infant inside a cold oven with the door cracked. The child had been there for two hours.

Long and his wife told authorities they had been drinking. He was then arrested and charged with endangerment. He's currently being held on $10,000 bond.

7. I'm gonna say it was the whiskey and not the pot.

I've made some dumb drunken decisions.

The only thing I do when smoked up is sometimes pause and rethink my actions for a second or two. Ironically nobody tells me I was acting unusually afterwards.

Probably because I only thought I was acting unusual.
