The State of Kentucky is about to make me homeless (and w/o a car)!!
ARRRRGGH!!!

Now, first off, this all started from something that is purely my fault. I wasn't paying taxes properly back when I was self-employed and had my own business. I owe the state a fair amount of money but nothing that couldn't handled via a payment plan over a few years.

Well, the State of Kentucky only accepts payment plans of up to 12 months. Well, my income now is less than 1/2 of what it used to be. Coupled with rent, car payment, car insurance, groceries, clothes, and medical bills up the wazoo (from my daughter who's been diagnosed with a couple of conditions) and I don't have a lot left over.

I submitted an offer to the State last year but it was rejected, apparently over some missing documentation on my end. Well, I have sent them another offer with ALL supporting documentation and they are still pursuing putting a levy on my paychecks that will leave me with only $250 every two weeks!

That means, immediately, I'll have to move out of my apartment and find someplace to live and probably another place to put all of my stuff (of course, this will cost money to move). Then, once my car payment goes beyond 30 days late, they'll start repossession proceedings, I'm sure. I can't file bankruptcy as I already did after I spent 7 months unemployed and when I got the new job, I couldn't handle the debt load.

I've been dealing w/an ombudsman for about a week but he's been slow moving and I only have until the end of business tomorrow to get this levy stopped.

I just cannot believe the government is going to LITERALLY make me homeless and then soon thereafter, be without transportation. At that point, well, bye-bye job and then I'm on welfare and sucking money out of the state instead of paying into it.

How in the hell does this make sense?!?!?

ARRRRRGGHHH!!!!

Sorry for the rant but I just can't fucking believe this is happening.

1. I am so sorry to hear this
I got screwed by those self-employment taxes myself, and am in the process of working out payment with the IRS (plus my $900 car repair bill).

Hope the ombudsman can help you - someone at the state is probably judged on their collections percentage, and the fact that you're unemployed and on welfare won't matter to his/her "hit rate".

2. I'm really sorry.
If you live in a large enough town or city, check with United Way to find out about housing and other assistance for homeless people. The lodgings may not be very comfortable, but you may be surprised to find that there is someplace clean where you can have a bed, shower and food to eat. You may also be able to get assistance with transportation to and from work depending on where you are, what kind of public transportation there is and the civic heart of your community. There but for the grace of God goes each of us. Many of us are just a paycheck away from your situation. Good luck.

3. Well, I'm going to hit on some relatives.
My mom lives too far away for me to even think of keeping the same job and my sister doesn't have the room (she has 3 kids, herself, and only a 3BR house). My only option is my dad and there's a good chance I can stay there.

But, I just can't believe the state can take that much money from someone. What if I wasn't in a position to stay w/a relative like if I had a job too far away from relatives to commute? And what about the $200+/mo. in prescriptions and food, clothing, etc.?

Just frustating as hell!!

I won't go into it, yours sounds worse, but hell is hell when you're in the fire. Good luck, I'll be praying for you.

6. Have you callled Legal Aid?
I'm thinking they may be able to have someone at least buy you some time, legally-speaking, especially if you tell them it's an emergency.

I heard a report not too long ago saying that the IRS is making it a point of going after self-employed people more now, more than ever. Since I'm in that catagory myself, it is a bit concerning. I just finished paying off the IRS from 3 years ago, where we ended up owing a huge chunk of change, right as the recession was rev'ing up, and my business was going in the toilet. Thankfully things are finally starting to turn around again--no thanks to Bushco.

7. The IRS is much easier to deal with. States have been hit hard
and this is the result.

I'm calling Legal Aid tomorrow but not sure how much they can help on such short notice.

I've been on the phone all afternoon and evening and calling in favors I don't have and prostrating myself before anyone I can.

All for what? A drop in the bucket for the state? They could have all their money and then some if they'd just stretch it out over 3-4 years.

8. *** Good News ***
I called a guy in collections directly (bypassing the ombudsman) and got the levy reduced by 2/3!

It's going to make things tight for the next 24 months but at least I won't lose my apt. and my car.

<Whhhheeeeeeewwww!>
