LEXINGTON LAWYER KEEPS POST AS CHALLENGE FALTERS

Lexington trial attorney Bill Garmer held on to the state Democratic Party chairmanship yesterday after an effort to replace him with former Miss America Heather French Henry fizzled.
Henry and her husband, former Lt. Gov. Steve Henry, said she never actively pursued the Democratic Party post, but let it be known she would be available to help the party if an impasse had arisen over its leadership.
The party's State Central Executive Committee chose Garmer to be chairman in Jan-uary. About 1,000 delegates at the party's gathering in the Lexington Convention Center ratified the committee's choice yesterday after U.S. Rep. Ben Chandler, Auditor Crit Luallen and Treasurer Jonathan Miller spoke in favor of Garmer.
Earlier in the day, Attorney General Greg Stumbo said he wanted to open up the party's quadrennial state convention to consider other candidates -- particularly Heather French Henry. But no motion ever materialized to consider anyone but Garmer.
