FRANKFORT, Ky. -- Daniel Groves, a top aide and confidant to Gov. Ernie Fletcher throughout his public career, resigned yesterday as a senior adviser in the governor's office.
Groves became the second high-ranking Fletcher staff member within a week to step down. Carla Blanton, Fletcher's communications director, announced Friday that she is leaving.
Groves, 36, said his resignation, which took effect immediately, was not caused by the ongoing special grand jury investigation of administration hiring practices. "I'm leaving with a clear conscience," he said by telephone. "My resignation is not about the investigation but about me pursuing career opportunities for me."

Democratic political consultant Danny Briscoe said of the resignation, "He (Groves) is the governor's closest friend and confidant, and I find it stunning that he's leaving."
