Democrat Virginia Woodward spent a year campaigning for Jefferson County's 37th District Senate seat and another year fighting for it in court, only to see her party choose state Rep. Perry Clark instead.
Clark, 48, received five of seven votes yesterday during a special meeting of Jefferson County's Democratic Party, making him the party's nominee for a Feb. 14 special election to fill the vacant Senate seat.

Clark's selection angered more than a dozen Woodward supporters who gathered at the Democratic Party's headquarters on Barret Avenue.

David Holton, chairman of the 28th District, said the decision was difficult, given how hard Woodward had worked. But Holton said Clark got his vote because he is in a better position to win.
