Jazz Funeral Emergency - Please help!

If any of you are planning on attending the protest in New Orleans next month and have room for a tag-along, I'm in dire straights. One by one, each of my co-participants dropped out and I am now without caravan. If you're in Shreveport, driving through Shreveport, or would let me meet you somewhere, I would really appreciate this - though it must sound like a pretty outrageous favor. I was just extrememly pumped about attending and disappointed that it looks like my plans have evaporated. Any help would be appreciated.

Do you not have a vehicle? That sucks b/c I thought that there was a nice group coming from S'port. What about a bus ride? Haven't you already secured accomodations here in NOLA?

Do you need a ride from Shreveport? Are you looking for someone to follow in your own car? Do you have a room reserved?

I can meet you in Lafayette or Baton Rouge, if you can make it that far...but my room is full. We are going on Wednesday and coming back on Friday (spending 2 nights). We are traveling from Abbeville.

4. I, too, was unclear about the problem here

If you're just uncomfortable about making the drive alone, let me reassure you by saying that I've made that drive alone many times without incident. I have family in S'port so I make the journey several times a year. If you're just worried about driving in town, maybe we could set up a way for someone to meet you outside of town so that you could follow them to your accommodations.

5. Just didn't want to go alone.

I was surprised that there was virtually no interest in Shreveport. Since the few who had committed to go with me have changed their minds (less than a week prior... I won't swear on a message list, I won't swear on a message list), it looks like this Shreveporter won't be going either. It's not a transportation issue. I just, understandably, don't want to head down to New Orleans by myself.

I don't have Internet access at home so I check when I can.

we have a room in the French Quarter, but it has 2 twin beds, and my son is a grown man, so there could be no "sharing." If you can "throw in" with someone, you can still meet us in Lafayette or Baton Rouge, and hang with us. Keep us informed.

But thanks for trying to help. Maybe I should grow some balls and drive down to New Orleans by myself. No hotel, no travelling companions; what's the worst that could happen? I think the worst thing that could happen is me sitting at home feeling sorry for myself and regretting not going for the rest of the year. I could leave here about 3AM, make it to NOLA for breakfast, and just drive on home after the day's events.

and *shame shame* on those who backed out with such short notice. I hate it when people do that! Anyway, you'll surely meet many like minded folks to spend your time with, it's not like you're going to be wandering the streets of New Orleans alone...there are JF4D events to take up the whole day. Come on down. I wouldnt be surprised if you were to hook up with some friendly progressives willing to host you or share a space with. If you're going to make the whole trip in 24 hours, I'd suggest a bus though, b/c you'll be so tired after the day, it could be dangerous for you to be on the road all night. Is there a way to "rebook" your accomodations?

had the time of my life! You can handle a night in New Orleans. Seriously. What do you need a roommate for? You'll be hanging with the DUers and going to the funeral, and the party, and whatever else. Call the hotel, book a room, and get your hiney to the city!

12. Jane, we are staying at the Dauphine Orleans

whose website is www.dauphineorleans.com. Why don't you book a room there for Thursday night??? Or better yet, for Wed and Thurs nites? I don't think you should drive back to Shreveport from N.O. at night, very tired, by yourself. I think there are some cheaper hotels mentioned in your original informational post, and there will be plenty of protestors staying at those. There are even some less expensive hotels in Metarie, on the outskirts of New Orleans proper, where you could stay and catch a taxi into the French Quarter and back.

I travel to Mexico and Las Vegas and Washington DC all the time by myself, and had to get over the idea of being afraid to travel by myself. Now, I prefer it that way!

BTW, for any of you single female DUers, looking for a place to really hang out and relax, and meet many other singles, my "place" in Mexico is Isla Mujeres, a small island off the coast of Cancun. I just fly into Cancun, catch a ferry to the island, and am in heaven. Many Americans and Europeans are constantly on the island...it is cheap, and just paradise for a laid-back old hippie chick like myself. It is extremely safe and a great place to meet others from everywhere. I made some of my very best friendships by meeting other libruls there!

13. I have been to Isla Mujeres once...

but it was like 7 years ago. I hear there has been quite a bit of construction since then. I don't think I even saw one hotel when I was there before! Lots of nice waterfront homes though.

I was curious. In Cozumel, it is very easy to meet people on your own. The large hotel pool areas are great for meeting your neighbors to make plans for later. How is it on Isla? I didn't choose to go there alone, because I thought it might be more of a secluded atmosphere. Are there any clubs to party at, or is it still a really mellow, quiet place?

It is really so beautiful there. I have wanted to go back again, but I know so many people in Cozumel now that it keeps beckoning me back. And I was unsure about how Isla Mujeres would be travelling alone. So, any details would be wonderful! Maybe I'll change my vacation destination sometime:-)

14. Hi Lisa,

I first discovered Isla Mujeres years ago by finding this website: www.islamujeres.net. I joined the message board there and have met many of the people who are members of the board, and have become good friends with many of them. On Isla, there are alot of hotels, all different prices, different standards. My best friend even bought a house there, refurnished it, and goes as often as she can to stay in her cute, little house. Gobs of good little restaurants, all prices. A few good nite spots with techno music where the younger generation hangs out, some places with live, non-techno music, a few coffee houses, many internet places. There are a few places there where board members and Americans hang out, so it is the easiest thing in the world to meet others...once you meet them, you tend to go eat supper with them, go have drinks with them, sit on the beach with them, and become friends. I am a teacher, so I go down there for all the school vacations and the whole summer. Let me know if you need more information about the island...if you "discovered" the island, like I did, you would become an Islaholic like I did....am seriously thinking of retiring there.

I am supposed to go back to Cozumel again in the fall to meet up with some friends. Maybe I'll do a couple days in Isla too. I hope too many people don't discover it thugh! The quaintness was such a big part of the charm when I was there before!
