Virginian has a question about a New Orleans hotel
http://www.lerichelieuhotel.com/

My folks are staying there in a few months for my stepsister's wedding. It looks like a really nice place but I was hoping I could get some local knowledge-Anyone?

1. Le Richlieu hotel
It's in a nice area of the French Quarter and your parents will probably be happy with it. Obviously, since I live here I've never stayed at it, so I cannot report firsthand on the service, etc. But it is a large hotel that is meticulously maintained and appears to be run very well. They won't have a funky New Orleans experience in some quaint creole cottage, but then again, they won't have any funky and not-so-nice surprises either. Within short walking distance of a very nice little coffee shop that I used to frequent with wonderful pastries...Croisant d'Or at 617 Ursulines St. Recommended.

2. Thanks
I told my Mom I would "check it out" so I figured I would post it here on DU and get some local knowledge. It looks to be a very nice place and they wouldn't really appreciate any "funky and not-so-nice surprises" anyway.

3. I think it's a good hotel. My friend's father stayed there
many years ago and liked it. (And he is the type who would definitely say something if he DIDN'T like it.)

And if your folks want to walk around in the Quarter, they will be in a perfect location.

As one who knows New Orleans well, I'd like to offer them this advice--and this goes for ANY place in New Orleans: be aware of safety and if you are going to an area you don't know, I strongly suggest you take a cab there and back, and tell the driver you expect to be dropped off at the DOOR of the place you are going, and later at the DOOR of your hotel.

The French Quarter is great, especially during the day. Bourbon St. is crossed by many streets, among them Bienville St. and St. Ann St. They can walk Bourbon in the evening if they want; if they do, I suggest they stay between Bienville and St. Ann, on Bourbon. During the day they can walk all around the whole Quarter.

The French Quarter is bounded by: Canal St. and Esplanade Avenue, and Rampart St. and the Mississippi River. Your folks should NOT cross Rampart St. going away from the French Quarter, if they are on foot. Just my opinion (as a former Ass't. DA in New Orleans.)

All these streets will be plain to you if you look at a map of the Quarter.
