Vitter said it is particularly important to keep focused on legislative elections in 2007, when term limits will leave Republican-friendly districts up for grabs.
Vitter said he is helping organize a political action committee to help elect more Republicans to the Louisiana Legislature and possibly to statewide office. He declined to say whether what he called "a state-focused leadership PAC" would target the governor's race.
Vitter drew applause when he predicted that Louisiana is on the verge of turning from a "blue state to one proudly burning red for a long, long time to come."
