The storm hit LA at approximately 6:10 a.m Monday August 29th. That was less than 3 days ago. I have a friend and a family member that I have not heard from since the storm hit. I don't want to be negative at a time like this. Plenty of others are doing that. I want to thank everyone that is coming up with ideas to help the thousands of people that are/will be displaced by this disaster. These children, these poor children, these poor black and white children, have no homes to go to. The ones that made it through (what was sure to be) the hellish conditions of the Superdome are (hopefully) bring brought to a better place. Although it's a strange town where they don't know anyone, wearing clothes that someone was nice enough to give them, going to a school in an atmosphere foreign to them. They have no idea when they will be able to go 'home' and what will be there when they go back.
Yes, they are showing the widespread looting in New Orleans, yes Bush is a criminal asshat, yes there is major blame to be passed around for this situation.
New Orleans may not be completely dry until February or March and there's nothing we can do about that. Electricity may be off until October. Biloxi's shoreline may be fuct until Christmas. And all of this is dependent on another hurricane not coming anywhere near.
but if *you* can do *one* thing to help someone who is helpless right now, you can make one hell of a difference. Thanks to the mods for placing the banner at the top of every page. Thanks to everyone for their kind words of encouragement and concern to the people on the Gulf coast.
To my friend Shelby and my cousin Freddy, your friends and family hope to hear from you soon. :grouphug:
