Unlike my house, there is electricity here (which means air conditioning, computer and internet YEAH!)It is a real mess over here in parts of the parish. I am so glad they asked everyone south of Highway 14 and Highway 90 to evacuate. Every area in Iberia Parish where they told everyone to evacuate from prior to the storm is severely flooded. There is 8-10 feet of water between Avery Island and New Iberia. Delcambre is a mess. Water covered Highway 14 all the way from Delcambre to Highway 90. The Port of Iberia, (across Hwy. 90 from my house) is under 6 feet of water. We were worried last night when the water started coming over 90 that we were going to have to evacuate, but by midnight the water started to recede a little. Houses in the Bayou Jack area are completely under water. The Sheriff's Dept. had to rescue over 400 people from flooded areas of the parish....by helicopter and air-boat. They turned New Iberia Senior High and Sugarland Elementary into shelters for people from Delcambre because the other two shelters we have set up for Hurricane Katrina victims had no room for them. New Iberia still has about 50% of the city without power, and for some residents (like those of us that live near the Port) Cleco is saying it may be a week or more before we get power back. Was Benito able to check on your house? I saw a post from him on another thread where he said he would go try to check on it.
Yesterday afternoon we were outside talking with the neighbors about the rising water, and two big green military helicopters flew overhead very low to the ground. We could see inside the windows of the choppers and guess who came to visit? Mary Landrieu, David Vitter and General Honore! They hovered over our neighborhood, then flew over the Port and hovered there for a long time. You know you can't be having a good day when a military helicopter with your senators and the general in charge of hurricane clean-up visits your neighborhood. LOL! :)
Stay safe and hope you can come home soon.
