Louisiana Republicans happily note that Hurricane Katrina has provided them an opportunity to win top elective offices – notably the mayorship of New Orleans and the Governorship of Louisina -- their party has rarely held since Reconstruction.

The Mayorship of New Orleans

The Mayorship of New Orleans has only been held once by a Republican. However, next year, this could change.

Peggy Wilson, a Republican and former New Orleans City Council president, has started is raising money for a potential bid to unseat New Orleans Mayor C. Ray Nagin, a Democrat, in February. She anaylses:

The Governorship of Louisiana

Congressman Bobby Jindal, who narrowly lostthe governor's race two years ago and who has support of the socially centrist Republicans in charge of the state party, and Senator David Vitter, who has a strong conservative network which allowed him to become the first Republican from Louisiana since Reconstruction to win a seat in the US Senate, are both said to be eyeing the governorship. David Vitter recently commented that the Democratic state officials' efforts after the hurricane that it is easy for him to "look like a giant in a land of pygmies."

Leading Louisianan Republican stategist, Jeff Crouere, has called Governor Blano “ a gone pecan," saying that “Republicans see a real opportunity to change the whole dynamics of the city," and thus state.

1. Regarding the NOLA Mayor's race, this article is of interest

I must say I think the Eddie Sapir and Edwin Murray combined strategy seems interesting...I think the Mitch Landrieu entering the race thing is bizarre, WHY would he want to even do that?

Give up Lt. Governor for Mayor, if Governor Blanco has to fall on her sword, then Mitch would be our candidate and who's going to beat him? Jindal, Vitter? I wouldn't place a bet on them.

Peggy Wilson's a dolt, her record on the Council easily proves that.

On Edit: I forgot to point out. Many of the white people in Uptown that they keep talking about are also Democrats, like my Grandmother for instance...not ALL the white people in NOLA are Republicans.

And the 40% or so of NOLA blacks remaining, hardly any of them are going to vote Republican.

So the Repukes had better not count their chickens before they hatch.

4. I personally don't believe it

It defies logic. Mitch is currently in a good position to either become Governor or run for Governor. Why would he give that up to run for Mayor?

It's just bullshit talk by pundits who don't know what they're talking about. My Uncle Dan told me that someone told him that they'd heard that both Mitch and Mary were going to switch parties in light of the Katrina black diaspora and that they would run as Republican's in 2007 and 2008...nobody believes THAT one either.

Man, I've been gone since 1987, but I used to cover the city council for the Guide Newspaper group back in the early 1980s, and Peggy Wilson is--to put is as politely as a southern upbringin gand a Christian Bros. education will allow--an idiot.

I think Sapir or Landrieu. Mitch can count on the Kennedy-like mystique, and a generation of white New Orleanians who don't carry any baggage of the racially-charged anti-Landrieu sentiment of 1969.

Sapir impressed me favorably a lot of years ago, but I've been gone from the local scene to long to know what he's been up to lately to form an opinion. Support from LIFE would certainly help.

5. Yes Wilson IS an idiot and I'd STRONGLY advise Mitch Landrieu

To stay in the job he already has.

Eddie Sapir is a good choice. I've NEVER trusted Ray Reagan and the fact that he's snuggling up to the pig that is Boysie Bollinger has just reaffirmed my longtime distrust of Ray Reagan.
