Three years after Hurricane Katrina decimated Keesler Air Force Base, Miss., you might just have to forgive an airmen rotating through if he asked, “What hurricane?”
Thousands of dead trees have been removed, the hospital has reopened and the base is well on its way to rebuilding facilities lost or damaged in the Aug. 29, 2005, storm.
“When I found out I was coming here, I was kind of interested to see what the base looked like,” said Col. Jeffrey Jackson, who arrived at Keesler about two months ago to take command of the 81st Mission Support Group.
“I drove on the base, and I couldn’t tell there had been a storm. I was expecting to see trees down, buildings damaged, that kind of stuff. ... I really couldn’t tell we had all the damage that had occurred.”
In fact, Keesler — with all its new facilities and its beachfront location — is rapidly becoming a desired destination for airmen.
