LAKE CHARLES, La. — It seems there’s been a fleur de lis explosion in Southwest Louisiana. The symbol is everywhere: vehicle window decals, sweat shirts, jackets, purses, jewelry, even tattoos.
Some fleurs de lys (the plural form) have been around for decades: The New Orleans Saints logo, the flag of Acadiana, the Acadian Ambulance logo, the row of fleurs de lys along the bottom of Cotton’s Holsum bread trucks and the Fleur de Leis Apartments in Lake Charles.
More recent additions include the New Orleans Hornets logo and the Fleur De Lis store in Lake Charles.
The fleur de lis has long been associated with New Orleans. After hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005, it became a rallying sign, a symbol of resilience for a people recovering from two devastating natural disasters. Its popularity spread throughout much of Louisiana.
