Louisiana state Rep. Tommy Wright said his arrest on allegations of having sex with another man in a public park in Rapides Parish is the result of a misunderstanding by a park ranger who walked into the restroom.
Wright, 48, of Jena, said he was dropping his pants to go to the restroom on Monday when a ranger at the Lake Buhlow commemorative area came into the restroom and -- seeing another man walking away -- misinterpreted what was happening.
Wright, a technical college instructor and businessman, represents District 22, which includes areas in LaSalle, Grant, Rapides and Winn parishes. He's serving his third term in the state House and can't, by law, seek re-election in 2007.
In a statement, Wright said that he had left a meeting, needed to go to the restroom and knew the park had the closest facility. He said he was using a urinal when another man emerged from a stall.
