Jazz Funeral and Wake for Democracy in New Orleans

I'm posting this on behalf of Christie, the coordinator in NO. Check the Louisiana Democrat group on Yahoo (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/LouisianaDemocrat/messages) and read the Jazz Funeral messages to get in touch with the coordinators. This Yahoo group also has some good ideas and actions for dealing with the upcoming voting machine purchases in Louisiana.

We are having a Jazz Funeral in New Orleans on Inauguration Day!

We are in the preliminary planning stages now for it. Our goal is to have the Jazz Funeral for Democracy on the nightly news Inauguration Day along with what is going to happen in Washington!

Tuesday, December 14th, we are having another planning meeting for it in New Orleans. If you are interested in helping or attending, I can fill in details for you. We have a parade route and permit, several Jazz bands for the parade, a hearse and, I think, a horse. We intend to represent any and all groups whose rights are being trampled by this administration. (OK, that leaves the religious right and millionaires.) We will have marchers from anti-war groups, environmentalists, gay rights, women's rights, and anyone else who feels a need to express their feelings to the world on January 20th.

This is a great way (my opinion here) to support our state and to show that the people in the (red) state of Louisiana do care.

The March:

The march will begin promptly @ 11:00 AM from Congo Square (aka "Louis Armstrong Park") on Rampart Street across from the French Quarter. Please be there no later than 10:00 AM (committee members by 9:00AM). We will proceed down Rampart to Canal Street and head towards the river. At Decatur Street, we will turn south and pause at the Moon Walk for a brief rally with music and speakers.

It is there that some kind of gesture in keeping with both traditional New Orleans jazz funerals and the political agenda will be accomplished.

At that moment, the mourning phase will conclude and the second line will commence. We will second line down the rest of Decatur Street, turn briefly onto Esplanade before heading down Frenchman Street to Washington Square Park where we will further celebrate with our own version of an inaugural ball. We hope to have live music and adult refreshments awaiting our arrival.

The costs of the city permit will be paid by a friend of the event.

MUSIC:

Another friend of the event has volunteered to hire the Treme' Brass Band as the official funeral band, although we are advised that we should expect many volunteer musicians to join the procession.

Leigh "Little Queenie" Harris (http://littlequeenie.com/) has agreed to perform following the march, as has God's Little Toy (http://godslittletoy.com/). Many others have expressed interest and we are awaiting several expected commitments.

ACCOMMODATIONS/TRAVEL

We are reserving blocks of rooms in and near the Quarter which we can make available to out of town guests at a much reduced rate of $69.00/night (first come/first serve-the rooms @ the Lafayette Hotel on St. Charles Avenue are highly recommended and will go fast. there are a variety of actions currently taking place here in Louisiana. Activists here are also engaged with national groups that are fighting against this stolen election in everyway we can. The fact is: Jan 20 WILL come...and when it does and IF this president is being sworn in on that day - This is the activity we have planned for that.

Please don't come here and disparage these efforts. Your input is appreciated but to belittle this work is an insult to all those who are currently working on this project. Sorry if you don't like the idea but we can do without insensitive remarks calling this project "whining" and commenting that " The GOP is laughing and rolling on the floor at the sight". 18. Hey, I look at it this way

If all the efforts we have made and are CONTINUING to make between now and Jan 6, do not work, and GOD FORBID, the "thing" ends up inaugurated, the jazz funeral will go as planned. If something different happens, and our efforts (and those of others, more powerful) produce a different result, the New Orleans gathering will take on a different flavor. Either way it is a great idea, and we are planning to make a big scene that will get national attention.

8. Need some practical info, Funkybutt and others:

A few people coming in from Abbeville....we think we would like to stay at a relatively inexpensive hotel in Kenner or Metarie, then taxi in to the funeral and back. That way, we don't have to fight driving downtown, or parking fees, etc. Is this a feasible plan? Approx how much would a taxi cost from those areas to funeral site, and then back?

Are these hotels safe?? (We are a few women)...The Extended Stay in Kenner, the Comfort Suites on Idaho in Kenner, or the Sleep Inn & Suites in Metarie.

9. My suggestions would be...

Personally I wouldn't recommend staying in Kenner or Metarie. Not because it's not safe but more because of the hassle involved with being that far away. A taxi from Metarie or even worse, Kenner, could cost more in a two way trip than you would save on a cheaper place. I'm guessing around $15 per trip (extra dollar or two per person).I understand the concerns about driving and parking downtown so I'd suggest someplace possibly uptown. I'd be happy to ask around over the next day or two and get back with you.

One place did come to mind when I read your post was this place called St. Vincent Guest House on 1507 Magazine. Friends of mine have stayed there pretty cheaply. They have several different size rooms with some that could host 4 guests. The place isn't fancy by any stretch of the imagination but it's convenient, safe, and affordable. I'd classify it as "budget". Its just a couple of blocks from the Street car line which would take the whole driving hassle out of the equation. Their room prices start at $50 and extra charges are added per person. If you're interested in this, give them a call at 504.523.3411 weekday mornings from 8-11.

I'll try to come up with more ideas, too. I'm not familiar with the accomodations you mentioned as I don't go out to Metarie or Kenner very often.

Many time I have stayed in a hotel just outside of New Orleans, and the money you save is not worth all the trouble. It is difficult to get around, difficult to find places to park downtown, and I almost always get lost.

Dragon's Den, 435 Esplanade Avenue on January 20, beginning

showing of the film, "Unbroken Line of History: Faubourg
Marigny." This short film is the second by Sean Gerowin
and the Urban Conservancy's Edward Melendez. Their first
film "Heat" was shown at Atlanta's Downstream Film Festival
and had its New Orleans opening at the Contemporary Arts
Center in 2003. The new film traces some of the elements
that created the unique neighborhood on the other side of
the French Quarter and some of the challenges it faces in
the present day.

Between showings of the film, OffBeat Magazine's Best
Emerging Latin/World Band nominee Saaraba will be

GENERAL UPDATES FOR FRIDAY, JANUARY 14, 2005

PARADE MARSHALS NEEDED:

We need volunteers to act as marshals during the funeral march. Ward Reilly will organize and instruct volunteers. Please contact Ward directly at [e-mail] . This is very important and we urge all of you to pitch in.

PERMITS:

Our permits have been approved and paid for. We are now street legal. The New Orleans Police Department has been most gracious and we can expect excellent security during the event. Many thanks to NOPD.

ROUTE:

Because interest in the march has grown well beyond our initial expectations, we have had to make some minor adjustments in our route. We will leave Congo Square (Louis Armstrong Park) at exactly 11:00 PM. A dignified procession will leave Congo Square and slowly proceed down Rampart to Canal. At Canal, we will turn towards the river and slowly make our way through the old commercial district until we reach Decatur at which point we will turn and head to our speakers' rally venue at Jackson Square.

We will arrive at Jackson Square between noon and 12:30 PM. The speakers should be on stage for approximately one and one half hours. Upon the conclusion of the rally, we will Second Line out of Jackson Square and back on to Decatur headed down river. At Turtle Bay, 1119 Decatur Street, the procession will stop, time permitting for a brief street party outside the club. By 3:30 PM, in accordance with our agreement with NOPD, we must be in the 500 block of Frenchmen Street where the march will disperse.

INAUGURAL BALLS:

Our "official" inaugural ball will begin at The Blue Nile, http://www.bluenilemusic.com/ , 532 Frenchmen Street, immediately upon the conclusion of the march. Live music and cash bar. Both floors will be open with the live music downstairs. In the event of an overflow crowd, Checkpoint Charley's just down the street is prepared to handle a large crowd.

A second, more sedate, gathering will take place at Turtle Bay with acoustic music and far less weirdness than that which is expected to occur on Frenchmen Street. It is anticipated that some will opt to end their march at this venue, approximately six city blocks before the end of the march. Any overflow crowd can be accommodated several doors down at Molly's On The Market or, if tourist traps strike your fancy, across the street at Jimmy Buffet's Margarittaville.

SAFETY:

As noted above, we will have more than adequate police protection. However, it is STRONGLY SUGGESTED that you not respond to any counter demonstrators along the funeral route. DO NOT ALLOW NUT JOBS ALONG THE ROUTE TO ELICIT ANY RESPONSE WHATSOEVER FROM YOU. Do not play into their hands. They will be there but they are not your problem. They are NOPD's problem. Establish and maintain a civil, if not friendly, association with the police officers in your vicinity and everything will go smoothly despite any attempts by fascists, rednecks, or idiots to disrupt your freedom of expression.

Cameras and video/digital recorders are great deterents to knuckleheads. Bring 'em if ya got 'em.

FINANCES:

We are skimming by on the money thing. Every time an unexpected expense arises, the money somehow seems to appear. My staff advises that we have raised $400.00 in the last two days. We have been advised that additional funds are in the mail. We still haven't raised all we need, but we have guarantors who have agreed to dig deep in their pockets to insure that everything is paid for and that the event goes forward as planned. But, if you are planning to kick in a few bucks and just haven't gotten around to it yet, now is the time. Our guarantors are on the hook for a pile of money. Volunteers with staple guns and tape needed to post flyers in and around Tulane, Xavier, Loyola, UNO, SUNO, Delgado, Magazine Street (Uptown and Downtown), Maple Street (Uptown), Oak Street (Uptown), and near music clubs throughout the area Sunday night. 70. NEW DEMOCRACY RISING: "Awake for Peace"

Oh, yes, we will be back for another celebration of the Left with an antiwar protest in New Orleans on March 19, 2005.

Michael and I are working on the new LAN (Louisiana Activist Network) website which will have all of the details. Keep your eye on JF4D for details. Right now, it's still on the drawing board.

Annie and I will be at the march in NYC as LAN's representatives that day, so I hope you guys will come down and take our places in the New Orleans march. The national movement has high expectations of the South after the success of JF4D.

Jazz Funeral was historic, but it was only a start. Keep coming back as the Southern Front continues to grow.

76. Turtle Bay was really fun

I was apprehensive at first, not knowing anyone, but the cameraderie was great--we were all so excited and upbeat, everyone clicked right away. I wish I lived closer to be a part of the New Democracy Rising action, but I know it will be successful, if the Jan 20 event is any indication. YAY Buddy Spell, and all others who participated in the organization of the best protest I have ever been a part of...
