http://pressherald.mainetoday.com/news/state/061027woodcock.htmlLiens, accusations heat up campaign The disclosure that Republican gubernatorial hopeful Chandler Woodcock of Farmington had 10 liens placed against his property for failing to pay sewer bills and income taxes unleashed a whirlwind of indignant explanations, angry finger-pointing, denials of responsibility and even a confession of sorts from another candidate Thursday.
The flurry of activity stemming from about $3,900 in bills, all of which Woodcock has since paid, began Wednesday night when WMTW-TV Channel 8 reported that 10 liens had been placed against Woodcock's home from 1997 to 2005.
At a news conference Thursday morning, Woodcock blamed his opponents for publicizing the liens, but he identified no candidate or political party by name. The campaigns of Democrat John Baldacci, Green Independent Patricia LaMarche and independent Barbara Merrill all denied any involvement. So did the Maine Democratic Party, which issued a statement saying "this is a private matter that has no place in the discussion over the 2006 election."
The story then took an unusual twist Thursday afternoon when Baldacci held his own news conference in Augusta to disclose that a lien was filed against his family restaurant in Bangor, Momma Baldacci's, in 2003 following the death of his mother in 2002.
