This Valentine's Day, the Maine Campaign to Impeach (www.maineimpeach.org) is organizing a statewide Call-In Day to Congressmen Mike Michaud, Tom Allen and John Conyers to ask them to begin impeachment investigations in the House of Representatives. Mainers who agree that investigations of the Bush/Cheney Administration should be held can call toll-free to the Capital Switchboard using any of these numbers:
1-880-828-0498
1-800-459-1887
1-800-614-2803
Ask to be connected to Congressman Michaud, Allen or Conyers. ( Conyers is the Chair of the House Judiciary Committee, where all impeachment investigations begin. )
These are suggested "talking points," but your own words are the best! Be sure to ask for a response and leave your name and address.
To Michaud and Allen:
* Please take strong leadership to put Impeachment investigations of President Bush and Vice President Cheney back on the table now.
* You swore an oath to protect our Constitution when you took office.
* Our Constitution and the balance of power is being undermined by this Administration, and the list of impeachable "high crimes and misdemeanors" continues to grow.
* It is your sworn duty to investigate the abuses of power, to end them, and to guarantee that such abuses will not happen in the future.
* There is nothing more important than saving our Democracy from tyranny and restoring the Constitution . Please act now!
* I want to know what you will do to put impeachment back on the table.
To Conyers:
All of the above, plus: I understand that HR 635, a Resolution to Investigate Impeachment, introduced by you last March, had 33 co-sponsors in the House and over 42,000 citizen co-sponsors on your website. There is now a majority of Democrats in the House, yet you have not re-introduced this bill. Why haven't you re-introduced a Bill to Impeach?
Although this call for impeachment crosses party and non-party lines, you should know that the Maine Democratic Party, at its June 3, 2006 State Convention, passed a Resolution (posted on the MaineDems.Org web page at this link:
http://mainedems.org/about/Resolution.aspx) which concludes with these two paragraphs:
Now, therefore, the DELEGATES TO THE 2006 MAINE Democratic Convention resolve that members of Congress be urged to hold George W. Bush and Richard B. Cheney accountable for their actions by taking whatever steps are necessary to ensure a full and complete investigation into their abuses of power, carrying the legal process through to its conclusion in an act of impeachment.
We further call upon the Maine State Legislature and Maine’s U. S. Representatives to call for an investigation by the U.S. House of Representatives concerning allegations of high crimes and misdemeanors committed by President George W. Bush and Vice-President Richard B. Cheney, and, if warranted, to initiate impeachment proceedings against them.
