I saw this on the news this morning.
Like any other state, I know that we are not immune to voter fraud. But imho, this bill appears to be a 'solution' looking for a problem. And though the article doesn't address it, I'd like to know how this proposal would affect absentee ballots. Seriously, wouldn't it make voting absentee harder for everyone involved, or does the bill not apply the same rules to absentee ballots; (which incidentally, R's seem to be very fond of)? If you, or someone you know is a ballot clerk, do you know if this proposal is something they want to see happen?
NAPLES, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- A Maine legislator has submitted a bill for the up coming legislative session which would require voters show photo identification before they could cast their vote. Representative Richard Cebra (R-Naples) says the change is necessary to prevent voter fraud and secure the voting process.
...................
The bill would require a photo id be presented before a person can obtain a ballot and walk up to the voting booth. If a person did not have a valid photo id, they could still cast a ballot, but only a provisional one that could be subject to a challenge if there are concerns.

"I am disappointed to hear about this proposal. I think it is the wrong solution to the wrong problem," stated Zachary Heiden, the legal director for the Maine Civil Liberties Union. "It is the wrong solution because these requirements burden people with low incomes, people who may be homeless, immigrants who may be citizens but may still have a hard time getting identification and that makes it harder for people to vote when that is a fundamental right."
....................
"This is not something that our office has ever been in favor of because of the logistics behind it, because of the complications to the voter that it would entail, and that really in terms of cost effectiveness, if the concern is voter fraud, it is extraordinarily rare in Maine," said
(Maine Secretary of State) Dunlap.
Representative Cebra says he has heard of a few voting irregularities and says the state should move to fix a potential problem before there is a problem.
.....................
The proposed legislation has been submitted to the legislature's Revisor's Office and will be up for debate in committee in the next legislative session.
