SINCE I'M OLD ENOUGH TO REMEMBER THE 50'S AND LIVED THROUGH THEM I FEEL QUALIFIED TO COMMENT! We had an economy similar to the one we have now; the youth were leaving the state at a rate never seen before. Jobs were scarce to nil and wages were poor to unbearable. The state had been in the republican bottle neck for sometime. The chance of increasing wages were nil to none. their were far more seasonal workers in all fields of labor. Jobs with no Benny's,some lasting a few months a year, grocery store bills(pd weekly or monthly seldom in full)credit accounts at the gas sta.and of course the oil, wood or coal paid of in the summer. the cry from the right"small business cannot afford to pay more" min wage increases were constantly voted down! the forward thinking people realized that increasing min. wage enrich everyone! well the right is still stopping Maine from increasing its wage scale! gas, heating oil, food and medical insurance continue to rise! this mentality has kept our state in the dark ages for years! while keeping the haves in control of the future! we need another Muskie to salvage Maine's future!
