Cheering death
Published: Monday, September 26, 2011 2:08 PM EDT Audience applause during recent Republican presidential debates for Texas Gov. Rick Perry’s execution tally and for the suggestion that a sick person should be allowed to die if he or she lacked health insurance continues to elicit comment from all corners of the land.
However, one group remains alarmingly silent on the matter: the candidates.
Perhaps the media din about the crowds’ mob mentality drowned them out, but we haven’t heard one of the GOP hopefuls speak up to condemn the audience’s Grim Reaper rah-rahs or repudiate what it says about their party.
Most of the candidates identify themselves as pro-life and Christian. What does their silence say about their respect for all life — not just fetuses — and willingness to uphold such Christian principles as compassion and forgiveness?
