... MTA has not provided any revenue to the state since the mid-1990s. Under the terms of the Sensible Transportation Act...the MTA is to transfer to the Maine Department of Transportation annually any "operating surplus."

"There is a lack of clarity about why MTA no longer transfers any funds to MDOT annually despite the statutory requirement and whether the state even still expects to receive any surplus," the OPEGA staff wrote...

Why no revenue since the mid-1990's? Well - clearly, because they needed a new headquarters, along with those giant Weimeraner photos at the new tourist plazas. I mean, sheesh. Why can't the state just leave those poor, hardworking MTA executives alone?

Wow, thanks for bringing this to light. I'm sure the truckers and other folks who mind the loss of the rest area in Pittsfield will be anxious to see this OPEGA report. For truckers it's especially galling to drive by that handy, shady place to stop for a break

I am not a trucker but I also miss the Pittsfield rest areas. I think that DOT could have found the $'s to keep them opened if they had wanted to. One point regarding them though--that part of I-95 is not in MTA territory.
as you can see some need more propaganda training than others.
how do I feel about the mta? well I spent many a day laboring to help build it. Since its inception the right has tried to get their greedy hands on its money. for a while I think they succeeded. wasn't long though before the pike was in the same repair as our rural highways are. since they couldn't hide this from such a wide public usage I think the political outfall allowed the money to stay with the pike. if it didn't it should!
Our highway funds,now go into the general fund and are squandered to keep other departments afloat.when we had dedicated department funds gas was cheaper and roads were better.
the turnpike was a private entity in maine built with bonds that was suppose to turn its keys over when the bonds were paid off! but it also was to be self sustaining.
lets leave it like that.
It's not a cash cow for its surplus to be rolled into a businessman's feed trough like so many of our tax dollars are wasted now.
