Mainers Launch People’s Veto to Defend Voting Rights

AUGUSTA – A diverse group of Maine residents today filed the paperwork to begin a People’s Veto of legislation designed to make it more difficult to vote.

Led by Barbara McDade, president of the League of Women Voters of Maine, six Maine residents made official a challenge to the section of LD 1376 that eliminates Election Day voter registration."

I totally agree with Rep Cebra's sentiment and political tactics. Photo ID has national and Statewide support and the State GOP should not go silent or hide in a corner just because it suffered a defeat at the polls due to tons of money spent by Donald Sussman, a campaign of hostility by the Maine press, and a poorly executed, under-funded campaign to resist the "Yes on 1" crowd of organized Democratic operatives.

I just hope Speaker Nutting and Senate President Raye don't lose their nerve. There should be an up or down vote on this critical and popular issue in the coming session after some heavy pressure put on a few wavering GOP lawmakers. There are some weak links in the GOP Senate, but its best we find out who they are now before the 2012 elections. Are the ones with cold feet ready to do the right thing on a tough vote or is just being re-elected (to do what?) more important?
