coyote and deer=1/3 of the problem
Edited on Thu Dec-01-11 06:06 PM by luckyleftyme2
Well as you know the coyote is a predator of deer. But they are not the only reason our deer herd is down. clear cutting known winter covers and over development is another 3rd. And the other third is the hunter and the fish and game dept's response to over population!
lets address this over population and extending the limit on bow hunters in certain areas. I use to hunt the wolf's neck farm area in freeport. I bow hunted and rifle hunted their for 10 years shooting several nice bucks as well as my hunting p.
It was not unusual to see several deer every outing. they opened the special deer season on bow and within 5 years the deer population was devastated. we gave up hunting the freeport, brunswick area. Now I know that several people took several deer multi-years and it was all legal! but really
how easy is it to shoot deer sept. under an apple tree? Some of these hunters are giving their deer to the soup kitchen. I mean c'mon their is hardly an over abundance of deer in this area!
Yes I'M SURE THAT THEIR IS SOME POACHING IN ALL AREAS BUT THESE ARE NOT HUNTERS,NOR SPORTSMAN! AND USUALLY A TRUE SPORTSMAN DROPS A DIME ON THEM!
What can we hunters do to correct these problems? well we can spend some time hunting coyotes, tip a trapper off to where you find scat or see them.
those of you that have land or a camp in the wilds can report hearing or seeing them and their location. The local coffee shop works well!
How about the developments? make them keep more green area, many developments are now using cluster units and keeping more green areas. take a 100 acres develop 10 and keep 90 forever wild is a good thing and beats the old 2acre parcels!
Clear cutting in winter bedding ares -STOP ENTIRELY! and for those who do it anyway banned them for life from the industry!
this is my opinion and it probably is the answer but its a start to something better than we got!
Of course their are some of you that like hunting that moose brush! not me
I like selective cutting to maintain a mix growth and forest!
