In 1996, LePage was hired to run Marden’s, the discount retail chain. In 2002, Efficiency Maine was created by the Legislature, “for the purposes of developing, planning, coordinating and implementing energy efficiency and alternative energy resources programs in the State” (35-A MRSA §10103.1.). LePage has a long history of opposing efforts to reduce consumption; just last month LePage told Mal Leary that, “Conservation is just another word for a Ponzi scheme in many respects.”

So it’s of interest that while LePage was running Marden’s, that company received over $168,000 from Efficiency Maine to help pay for renovations to some its stores. Over a six year period beginning in 2004, the LePage applied for and received money that was used to replace lighting fixtures and other schemes to allow Marden’s to save up to three times more in savings from reduce energy usage.

Using energy efficiently is a good thing, not only for a business’ bottom line but the environment as a whole. The Governor’s disparaging remarks about conservation while taking taxpayer money to do so is simply disingenuous.

here,s a man the republicans are proud of! I mean after all he,s a chip of the ole block of
cronyism! thats what big bucks look for ! A man to run their business that has no loyalty except for money! one who will sell out his fellow man for corporate greed!
well this is one time I agree with him we should cut welfare-that's all corporate welfare!
especially in maine! I'd like to know how many more of these deals were made to businesses!
and compare per business monies to per families money!
