Mulling Senate bid, Cardin reaches out
by Eric Fingerhut

Staff Writer

Seriously considering a run for the Senate in Maryland, Rep. Ben Cardin (D-Md.) stopped by Washington Jewish Week offices last week as part of his outreach to residents of Montgomery and Prince George's counties.

Looking to succeed the retiring Sen. Paul Sarbanes (D-Md.) the 10-term member of Congress -- whose oddly-shaped Third District ranges from the northern suburbs of Baltimore into Howard and Anne Arundel counties -- said he thinks his background and record is "one that would be attractive in the Washington suburbs."

For instance, he noted, he has supported federal funding for the Intercounty Connector and pushed for the creation of an additional Maryland federal courthouse in Greenbelt against the wishes of others in the state's northern portions.

Cardin, 62, said that "Judaism is an extremely important part of my life," pointing out that he was involved in the young leadership division of Baltimore's Jewish federation, The Associated, as well as many other organizations, and that his wife, Myrna, has served as president of both the Baltimore JCC and the Baltimore Jewish Council.
