R. Edward Lopez: 1953-2005
Edited on Sun May-22-05 08:57 PM by CC
Lopez - the longest running newsman in rock radio. He outlasted 14 different morning shows in his 27 year career.

The battlements of the Hearst Broadcast Castle won't be the same without him.

Read the official Lopez statement from our General Manager.

It is with great sadness that I inform you that Bob Lopez has lost his battle with lung cancer.

Since 98 Rock’s inception over 28 years ago, we have had more than 10 morning shows. Every show included, “Lopez”. He was the driving force behind each show. An unabashed liberal, he was absolute in his beliefs. Lopez was extremely bright, incredibly passionate with an extraordinary sense of humor. He was “one of a kind”.

As a husband and a father, his love knew no boundaries. Lopez is survived by his wife, Jean “Trixie” and his daughter Leandra. In lieu of flowers a scholarship will be set up in Leandra’s name.

More information is to follow.

Ed Kiernan
General Manager
WBAL/WIYY Radio

Sad news for those of us that grew up listening to Lopez. But even sadder for his family and friends.

1. Yeah... I'm sad
I've listened to Lopez ever since I moved to Maryland in '87. I understand that he was listening to rock music up until he lost consciousness. Rock on, Lopez! We'll miss you! :headbang:

2. I haven't listened to 98rock in years
so I was surprised when I heard that Lopez was sick (in fact, I think I saw it on Channel 11 before I heard anything on the radio) - I heard that he also appeared on the Chip Franklin show, but I also haven't listened to WBAL in many years (ever since Alan Prell left).

Anyway, I'll miss Lopez...he was good, very good.

Tim
