Dear MoveOn member,
Al Gore is giving an important speech on Monday in D.C. and you're invited. Bob Barr is introducing him (yes, that Bob Barr—the former Clinton impeachment manager). What brought this odd couple together?
On December 17, the president admitted to authorizing a broad program of repeated NSA wiretapping of American citizens, without warrants, in defiance of safeguards mandated by Congress.1 This assertion of executive power threatens to place unchecked power in the president, ignoring our constitutional system and threatening our most basic civil liberties.
We believe, like many across the political spectrum, that if America doesn't respond, our constitutional system may be damaged beyond repair. In response, we've joined a broad coalition of progressive and conservative organizations, called the Liberty Coalition, that are committed to defending the core principles of American democracy.
The Liberty Coalition and the American Constitution Society are cosponsoring a speech this coming Monday by former Vice President Gore at DAR Constitution Hall in Washington DC about the dangers of unchecked executive power and why it's important for Americans to respond. As part of the Liberty Coalition, MoveOn members are invited.

This speech is going to take place on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a day where we honor a true American hero for justice and peace. Dr. King himself was a victim of secret government surveillance. This is an important time for us to reflect on the civil rights and liberties that are core to our identity as Americans.
We hope you will be able to join us.
Thanks for all you do,
